VANCOUVER PRODUCTION HUB UNVEILS MASSIVE EXPANSION
The suburban Vancouver studio, which opened two years ago with Netflix as a frequent user, will add a 600,000-square-foot facility to include 300,000 square feet of new soundstages and 300,000 square feet of production support space for wardrobe, workshops and offices.
VANCOUVER’S ANIMATION AND VISUAL EFFECTS INDUSTRY CRACKS THE BILLION-DOLLAR MARK
The capacity of the digital creative industry in B.C. right now is huge; it’s the new big factory in town, offering steady work and good pay. Direct industry spend in Metro Vancouver has almost tripled since 2012, according to the VEC, and is expected to surpass $1 billion this year. https://www.bcbusiness.ca/Toon-Town-Vancouvers-animation-and-visual-effects-industry-cracks-the-billion-dollar-mark
MIXED-HERITAGE ARTISTS FIND THEIR PLACE AT THE VANCOUVER FRINGE FESTIVAL
Three artists at this year’s fest untangle that complexity and the feeling of being “in between”. And not surprisingly, when the topic’s mixed heritage, they’re combining a range of forms to do it—from storytelling to clowning, comedy, video, and poetry. Along the way, they’ve found a space to finally call their own. https://www.straight.com/arts/1295191/mixed-heritage-artists-find-their-place-vancouver-fringe-festival
NETFLIX AND STREAMING MEANS CANADIAN FEATURE FILMS STRUGGLE TO FIND AUDIENCES
Netflix is a source of controversy on the international festival circuit. Their films have been absent from the Cannes Film Festival lineup for two years due to an impasse over theatrical release requirements in France. European exhibitors have also pushed back against the Venice Film Festival for programming films that will get only limited exposure in theatres, and then will be available exclusively for Netflix subscribers. https://www.bclocalnews.com/entertainment/netflix-and-streaming-means-canadian-feature-films-struggle-to-find-audiences-tiff/
