ARTS PROGRAM PUTS
EAST VANCOUVER KIDS IN THE LIMELIGHT
Maureen Webb grew up poor.
Even though she would go on to become one of the most celebrated casting directors in Vancouver — she won her fourth Leo Award for Best Casting in a Motion Picture earlier this year — Webb never forgot what it was like to grow up on the outside of privilege. She also never forgot the positive impact arts programs had on her during the meagre years of childhood.

'WE'RE STILL TRYING
TO GET IT MADE:' STAN LEE BACKED CANADIAN-SET SERIES IN FINAL YEARS
Kevin Gillis, creator of the
animated series The Raccoons, says as recently as a few years ago he was working with Lee on a live-action version of an unrealized comic book idea "very near and dear to his heart." The show was called Stan Lee's The Chosen, and its concept revolved around an Indigenous man who left his reserve behind for a job as a Toronto police officer.
ACTRESS ANN DOWD ON
WHAT IT WAS LIKE NOT FINDING SUCCESS UNTIL HER FIFTIES
What do you do between the
ages of 30 and 56? Because, as we know, life is long. Life is short, but really life is long in that regard. So, darlings, I want to tell you a few things that I believe deeply in the hopes that it might, in some way, give you a moment to think.
DOUGLAS RAIN,
STRATFORD FESTIVAL PIONEER AND VOICE OF HAL 9000, DIES
The Stratford Festival says
it is mourning the loss of a “rare artist” and one of its pioneers, Douglas Rain, who died at the age of 90 on Sunday morning. “Canadian theatre has lost one of its greatest talents and a guiding light in its development,” the festival’s artistic director, Antoni Cimolino, said in a press release Sunday.
EXPLOSIVE B.C.
GROWTH SPAWNS VR SUPPORT HUBS, POST-SECONDARY PROGRAMS

Vancouver Inc. closed suddenly in September, 150 workers were left without jobs at what was then one of the stalwarts of the local gaming sector. Many moved on very quickly, but not necessarily to another gaming studio.
The question of whether or
not theatre performance can serve as research is both practical and political. Performance with audience feedback is a useful dramaturgical tool – that’s the practical part. Whether or not creation and performance of a play can have the rigour of research may be more contentious – that’s the political part.

WHAT DIRECTORS
REALLY MEAN WHEN THEY SAY ‘LESS IS MORE’
We’re often told by
directors and teachers that “less is more,” but less what is more what? The note requires at least a qualifier to help us define what it is we are reducing, and what we are likely to achieve in the process. Look at a range of options and select the one you deem to be the most appropriate in the take. That’s the definition of a choice.
If you have big dreams and
goals for your career (beyond unpaid work), there will likely come a time when you must begin to say no. To help you figure out whether to take or pass on a job offer, here are three things to ask before making a decision.
HOW TO TAKE CARE OF
YOURSELF IN AUDITIONS, ON SET + IN LIFE
Being a professional actor
requires the ability to ask yourself, “What do I need?” As you progress, casting directors, directors, and various roles will demand different things from you, so it pays to take care of yourself for the sake of mental and physical health, as well as career preparedness.
