Despite any obligation to drop trade barriers and allow goods and services to move freely in the NAFTA zone without discrimination, the barriers that protect Canadian cultural industries from being swamped by U.S. entertainment giants are allowed to stand. But it was drafted in a pre-digital, pre-Internet age, and while Canada has said
it is open to “modernizing” NAFTA, it continues to insist on a “robust” exception to free trade for cultural industries.
People tend to ignore warnings from their internet service providers that they face imminent legal action for illegally distributing a movie.
They’re skeptical a copyright holder would actually follow through and sue them for merely downloading a film, something millions of people do every day.

The Celluloid Social Club (CSC) is a monthly, independent short film screening and networking event held at the ANZA Club in Vancouver, BC, running since November 1997. Each film is
followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers with a networking party after the screenings.
Both in terms of admissions and number of films screened, VIFF is among the five largest film festivals in North America. Screening films from more than 70 countries on nine screens, VIFF's program includes the pick of the world’s top film fests and many undiscovered gems.
