well.
CITY OF VANCOUVER PROVIDES $375,000 GRANT TO HELP
#SAVETHERIO
After a months-long campaign by its operators to raise funds to buy The Rio Theatre, after news broke that it was up for sale and could be redeveloped, the City of Vancouver has now pitched in to #SaveTheRio as well, with a $375,000 grant to the East Vancouver
venue.
A QUIET END TO CANADIAN THEATRE’S FIRST BRUSH WITH #METOO
The civil suits between Soulpepper Theatre Company, Albert Schultz and four actors who alleged the former artistic director of Toronto’s largest not-for-profit theatre company was a “serial sexual predator” have been settled out of
court – but they will have significantly altered the inner workings of arts institutions across Canada.
THE STAKES ARE HIGH FOR 'CRAZY RICH ASIANS' — AND THAT'S THE POINT
The new film's creators turned down a "gigantic payday" at Netflix to ensure the first Asian-American-focused studio movie in 25 years would be seen in theaters and, if
all goes well, reshape the Hollywood landscape: "The biggest stage with the biggest stakes — that's what we asked for."
A ROUGH REHEARSAL, A SUICIDE AND A BROADWAY SHOW IN
TURMOIL
It is rarely possible to know exactly why someone takes his own life, and suicide generally has multiple causes. But the death of Mr. Loeffelholz on June 29 has rattled the cast, crew and creative team of one of Broadway’s marquee shows.
HEADSHOTS VS. PORTRAITS + HOW YOU CAN USE BOTH TO YOUR ADVANTAGE

Presented by dog on the beach productions. From Shakespeare’s original text
we create our world … an interpretation that embraces fetish, alternative sexuality and unorthodox lifestyles. Reflected in current events, Shakespeare’s themes of justice, false virtue, mendacity, hypocrisy and speaking truth to power still ring true.
Vines Art Festival is an accessible community-oriented free public event that creates platforms for local artists and performers to create with and on the land, steering their creative impulses
toward work that focuses on the environment – whether a deep love of nature, sustainability, or climate justice.
More than 70 films from 15 countries are featured at this 30th anniversary Festival, along with 11 visiting filmmakers, 27 local directors and numerous local performing artists, in addition to parties and talkback sessions.
Now in its third year, The Monsoon Arts Festival runs August 9-19, 2018 in Vancouver and Surrey, with a deliberate spotlight on South Asian theatre. South Asian Canadians are the largest visible
minority group in Canada, yet a simple scan of Vancouver’s performing arts community suggests that there are very few South Asian theatre professionals currently working in our industry.
Stories illustrate our universally shared experiences. The Cold Reading Series (CRS) is committed to supporting and developing the talents of Vancouver’s story tellers – writers, actors, and musicians alike – by providing a forum where they can present their craft to a live audience and get instant feedback.
The festival features a young company
of 38 emerging theatre artists who will direct, design, stage manage, tech, produce, and perform in three hot contemporary Canadian plays: Selfie by Christine Quintana, Tiny Replicas by Dave Deveau, and Theory by Norman Yeung.
