THIRD INSTALLMENT OF MAJOR FILM MAY NOT SHOOT IN VANCOUVER
Industry chatter about a
blockbuster franchise born in Vancouver moving to the United States has many locals hoping it’s not true. A Production Weekly posting this week is suggesting Deadpool 3 might be shot in Atlanta, but that hasn’t been confirmed.
VANCOUVER'S QUEER FILM FEST ILLUMINATES THE FULL BEAUTY OF LGBTQ LIVES
Next week, one of Canada's premiere LGBTQ film events is facing what is many-a-queer's greatest fears: it is turning 30. But the Vancouver Queer Film Festival — a year younger than Montreal's Image+Nation and a few years older than Toronto's Inside Out — has no
such age anxiety. It's ready to celebrate.
HOW RICKY HE'S FIRST 'FREAKY FRIDAY' AUDITION LANDED HIM AN
UNEXPECTED LEAD ROLE
Born and raised in Vancouver, Ricky He describes his early pursuit of the performing arts as a “fun extracurricular” because he didn’t see Asian Americans widely represented on TV or in films growing up. He walked into his “Freaky Friday” audition to read for the role of the main character’s best friend, but walked away from the
process cast as the film’s leading man.
CANADA TOPS FEATURE FILM LOCATION FOR 1ST TIME, SAYS
FILMLA
When it comes to Hollywood, the Great While North can declare victory. For the very first time Canada is the number one production location for movies, according to a FilmLA report.

I USED TO DISMISS CANADIAN FILM — NOW I'M A SUPERFAN. HERE ARE
5 REASONS YOU SHOULD STAN CANCON
Living here, it's incredibly easy to dismiss homegrown talent for the more accessible gloss of Hollywood fare. But I decided to make an effort to begin seeking out Canadian content — and the result has been surprising. I'm steadily turning into a
superfan.
REJECTED FROM 60 FESTS, CLEO TELLIER WAS
READY TO ABANDON FILM...THEN HER SHORT GOT 17 MILLION VIEWS
"I know that as a woman in 2018, it's always going to be hard making movies, but now I have the confidence to say, 'I've done this successful film, I know what's right for the story and you have to trust me.' I didn't have that confidence before — now I have 17 million people backing me
up."
HOW THE SOULPEPPER CASE CHANGED CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS WITHOUT GOING TO
TRIAL
They may not have had their day in court, but the actresses who sued the Soulpepper Theatre Company and one of its co-founders over sexual harassment allegations succeeded in changing the company’s culture, legal experts say, showing the power of civil actions as a tool in the #MeToo
movement.
Foreign filming in the city has been booming of late, spurred on by tax incentives, varied architecture, an endless appetite for online streaming and the presence of several top studios and visual effects companies specializing in post-production.
'GLOW' STAR BETTY GILPIN: WHY ACTING IS "A SEESAW OF DEATH"
The actress, hot off her first Emmy nom, reflects on her craft's ego-boosting, princess-making highs and
soul-crushing, debilitating lows: "Being an actor feels like your ego is on a violent pendulum swing between a field of cashmere and a casual tub of knives."
Following three years in development, two bidding wars, a casting dragnet that extended to four continents, and strenuous efforts at every level of filmmaking to maintain the book’s cultural authenticity and specificity, Crazy Rich Asians arrives in theaters as the
first Hollywood studio movie to feature a predominantly Asian cast in a contemporary setting since 1993’s Asian-American ensemble drama The Joy Luck Club.
Agents and casting directors know that many of the reels they see are “homemade.” They understand that most new actors don’t have a lot of footage, if any. They just want to see who you are and what you can do. Here’s what to consider when putting together your
reel.
On camera, limitless possibilities translate as general. Human limitations translate as a clearly-defined character. The “you are the character and the character is you” approach would actually work if actors isolated specific qualities or character traits (or character limitations if you will) that they themselves possess and let
those specific qualities dictate how they play the entire scene.
WHY ‘CLOSE ENOUGH’ DOESN’T CUT IT FOR AUDITIONS + HOW TO BE
BETTER
What makes you valuable as a talent is the fact that you’re capable of a limitless number of remarkable deliveries. Make it your mission at the onset of every audition and every session to discover just a few of them. It’s what you’re paid to deliver. No one is interested in hiring a robot—you’re paid to have a
pulse.

UPCOMING EVENTS
VINE ARTS FESTIVAL
August 8-19
Vines Art Festival is an accessible community-oriented free public event that creates platforms for local artists and performers to
create with and on the land, steering their creative impulses toward work that focuses on the environment – whether a deep love of nature, sustainability, or climate justice.
More than 70 films from 15 countries are featured at this 30th anniversary Festival, along with 11 visiting filmmakers, 27 local directors and numerous local performing artists, in addition to parties and talkback sessions.
Now in its third year, The Monsoon Arts Festival runs August 9-19, 2018 in Vancouver and Surrey, with a deliberate spotlight on South Asian theatre. South Asian Canadians are the largest visible minority group in Canada, yet a simple scan of
Vancouver’s performing arts community suggests that there are very few South Asian theatre professionals currently working in our industry.
Stories illustrate our universally shared experiences. The Cold Reading Series (CRS) is committed to supporting and developing the talents of Vancouver’s story tellers – writers, actors, and musicians alike – by providing a forum where they can present their craft to a live audience and get instant feedback.
The festival features a young company of 38 emerging theatre artists who will direct, design, stage manage, tech, produce, and perform in three hot contemporary Canadian plays: Selfie by
Christine Quintana, Tiny Replicas by Dave Deveau, and Theory by Norman Yeung.
