CANADIAN STAR SANDRA OH TALKS KILLING EVE, ASIAN REPRESENTATION, VANCOUVER, AND TRUDEAU
When it
comes to Asian North American representation on screen, one of the current trailblazers is Canada's own Sandra Oh. Oh, who is of Korean descent, is best known for her role on Grey's Anatomy. But the launch of her career had many ties to Vancouver.
VANCOUVER FILM COMMUNITY ADDRESSES MENTAL HEALTH AND
ADDICTION
Hollywood North might seem glamorous from the outside but it isn’t immune from mental health struggles and substance abuse. The local community has been devastated by a spate of suicides, as well as overdoses related to the opioid crisis. Which is why several film and television industry unions banded together to form a working
group.
VANCOUVER CAREER FAIR FOR SCREEN-BASED INDUSTRIES PROVES THE CITY’S LEADERSHIP
IN ANIMATION, EFFECTS, AND GAMING
There’s a good reason why Vancouver is known colloquially as Hollywood North. With increasing numbers of big-budget productions choosing the city, the call for talent is enormous.
Having previously appeared on Broadway in the dark comedy, Grace, and toured with his one-man show FDR, Asner has returned to the stage in another one-man show, A Man and His Prostate, set to play New Westminster’s Anvil Centre later this
month.
N.S. BOASTS OF $100M IN FILM PRODUCTION, BUT INDUSTRY SAYS JOBS STILL
SCARCE
Nova Scotia says film production in the province has gradually increased over the last two years to $102 million in 2017-18, but critics say the industry still hasn’t nearly recovered from the controversial axing of the film tax credit.
There are already a wide array of producers and film executives who want to set up shop in Toronto but have no place to film. Regrettably, this is not a new phenomenon. In 2016, Ontario lost $130 million in production value due to lack of studio
space.
THE HALF-BILLION DOLLAR NETFLIX BET ON HOLLYWOOD NORTH
There’s no doubt that Netflix benefits from the Canadian deal—they are still a business. Netflix is a U.S.
company, and the Canadian investment will bring huge returns for their non-Canadian pockets. The dilemma comes down to how much creators, production crews and Netflix customers in Canada will benefit from the deal.
L.A. CITY ATTORNEY COMPLETES PAY-TO-PLAY AUDITION PROSECUTIONS: "WE MADE AN IMPACT"
Fifteen months after announcing a sweeping crackdown against pay-to-play auditions, Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer has completed his prosecutorial effort against more than two dozen offenders. The mix of acting workshop owners
and casting professionals accepted plea deals for violating California’s Krekorian Talent Scam Prevention Act, which had previously been rarely enforced.
HOLLYWOOD’S GUILDS MOVE TO PROTECT MEMBERS RESIDUALS AND BENEFITS IN TWC BANKRUPTCY
Hollywood’s unions and their pension and health plans have filed court papers to protect their members’ residuals and benefits in the
Weinstein Company’s ongoing bankruptcy proceedings. It’s a common move when companies declare bankruptcy so that current and future obligations to the union’s members will be paid.
Let’s be honest, when you look at what you actually need vs. the small amount you saved from your side job or the 10 percent you put away from that surprise residual check, it is not enough. Don’t fret! You can make your project and put your story out into the world.
How badly you want your deep need to be met is what will create the high stakes. It’s not just what you want from the other person in the scene but what you do to get it. Because there is a conflict and it’s not easy to accomplish, this makes things interesting for you and compelling for the audience as they witness you fight for your
life.
THE COMPETITIVE EDGE: ONE SURPRISING ELEMENT THAT CAN CALM YOUR
NERVES
The one element that can calm your nerves that I’ve never heard been talked about before is Understanding similarities between a casting job and an acting job. If you really understand that casting directors are in many ways the same as you, the actor, I believe you can come into an audition room feeling less nervous and more on an
equal footing.
