VANCOUVER FILM STUDIO BOSSES SAY BC'S RECORD YEAR NOT JUST ABOUT NUMBERS
We may be on top now, but some wonder if BC can continue attracting more productions here than anywhere else in Canada. Two Vancouver-based producers say, for them, it’s not really a numbers game.

BLACKFOOT FILMMAKER TALKS SUNDANCE INSTITUTE HONOUR, TELLING INDIGENOUS STORIES
Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers has been recognized with multiple awards including the 2014 Vancouver Mayor's Arts Awards. Most recently, Tailfeathers was awarded the prestigious Sundance Institute's Merata Mita Fellowship — an honour bestowed upon an Indigenous filmmaker "from a global pool of nominees."

PROMOTING SOCIAL CHANGE THROUGH THE ARTS DURING BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Omari Newton’s interactive one-man show explores the lives of select black artists, athletes and activists. Newton describes his interactive multimedia show as a hybrid of a TED Talk, a stand-up comedy show and a hip-hop concert.

THE SMOKING MAN
Who is the Cigarette Smoking Man actor William B Davis in The X Files? Scepticism lecturer and former water skiing champion, he later founded his own acting school in Vancouver - The William Davis Centre For Acting Study. Then, in 1993 he picked up his career-defining role - The Cigarette Smoking Man in The X Files.

B.C. FILMMAKERS AWARDED $30,000 PRIZE TO DEVELOP SHORT FILMS
Two developing filmmakers have been awarded cash prizes that will help further their careers in the first annual Directors Guild of Canada B.C. Short Film Awards.

THOMAS MIDDLEDITCH FINALLY LANDS ONSCREEN ROLE IN CANADA AFTER U.S. SUCCESS
Emmy-nominated “Silicon Valley” star Thomas Middleditch has taken the opposite career path of many Canadian actors. Instead of starting his career here and then moving to the U.S., the Nelson, B.C., native went south first about a decade ago and is finally finding his footing on this side of the border with the new Canadian film “Entanglement.”

CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER’S ROUTE TO THE OSCARS THE STUFF OF LEGEND
By now, Plummer’s last-minute replacement of Kevin Spacey is the stuff of legend: Ridley Scott’s film was pretty much a wrap when the sexual assault allegations against Spacey surfaced. Scott approached Plummer with the mad idea that they reshoot all the Getty scenes in just nine days. It was a challenge that would intimidate most 20-somethings, never mind a man pushing 90.

REED MORANO MAKES HISTORY WITH DGA WIN
Reed Morano has cemented her place in in the record books with a historic Directors Guild of America win. This past Saturday she took home the DGA Award in the drama series category for helming “Offred,” the pilot of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Morano previously received an Emmy for the dystopian series, making her the first woman to win both prizes.

JORDAN PEELE QUIT ACTING BECAUSE HE WAS OFFERED THE ROLE OF S—T IN ‘THE EMOJI MOVIE’
The one downside to Jordan Peele being so successful as a filmmaker is that he says he’s done with acting. The “Get Out” writer/director, who received three Academy Award nominations for his debut feature, won a different prize: best first-time director at the DGA Awards.

We hear over and over again that headshots are an actor’s calling card or first impression. Once the homework of selecting the right photographer to take your headshots is complete, you want to make sure you’re doing your part to create the platform for a successful session. Here are six mistakes I notice actors make when taking headshots:

2018 UNIFIED GENERAL AUDITION & QUALIFIERS
March 7-8
The UGA is annual event is hosted by the Greater Vancouver Professional Theatre Alliance where theatre actors audition in front of 30+ theatre directors. First time and non-full-union actors must attend and pass the Qualifiers in order to attend the 2018 UGAs. Registration deadline for Qualifiers is February 13.
