LEADERSHIP SERIES: LAYING THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE B.C. FILM INDUSTRY
Currently, the
Vancouver Film industry is doing well, hosting big-name productions like the Dwayne Johnson feature film Skyscraper, along with popular TV franchises like Riverdale and The X-Files that are keeping B.C. film workers busy. But it hasn’t always been this way.
VANCOUVER FILM INDUSTRY VETERANS SPEAK OUT ABOUT SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN HOLLYWOOD
NORTH
For Lisa Ovies, it was a heavy conversation: speaking with teenage students at her Vancouver-based acting school about her own experience with sexual harassment. However, Ovies and others say it isn’t just a problem in Hollywood: it’s happening in Canada too.
Mythic. Heart-breaking. Poetic. These are the words used by a peer assessment committee in describing Indian Arm — a
play by Port Moody writer and actor Hiro Kanagawa that clinched the 2017 Governor General's Literary Award for drama today (Wednesday).
SAVED FROM BANKRUPTCY, MAGNETIC NORTH GETS A SECOND CHANCE
Over the summer, a group of artists and administrators came together to try to save Magnetic North from shutting down permanently – and, on Monday,
they will announce they plan to settle the festival's debts and relaunch it anew in 2019.
Calling Jared Abrahamson a well-travelled man would be an understatement. The
Flin Flon-born actor’s newest television show, the Netflix-Showcase sci-fi production Travelers, aired its second season premiere on Oct. 16.
CANADA'S ACTORS UNION HIRES LAWYER TO REVIEW SEXUAL HARASSMENT POLICIES
Spurred by the Harvey Weinstein scandal, ACTRA Toronto, the Canadian actors union's biggest branch, has hired a veteran
labor lawyer to conduct a review of its internal sexual harassment policies.
We have two problems. We clearly have overdependence on foreign productions. Talk about branch plant. It’s even branch plant
without many plants. This leads us to the second problem — the decline in independent Canadian production.
HELEN SHAVER, DON SHEBIB AMONG FILMMAKERS CELEBRATED AT DGC AWARDS
Such acclaimed Canadian filmmakers as Helen Shaver, Bruce McDonald and Don Shebib were among the artists

IN $25 BILLION VIDEO GAME INDUSTRY, VOICE ACTORS FACE BROKEN VOCAL CORDS AND LOW PAY

CREATING A PROJECT-PERFECT REEL JUST GOT A LOT EASIER
Next time you submit your reel for a project, ask yourself if it includes production-relevant material and if it truly features you at your absolute best. Doing so will amplify your ability to supercharge your audition rate, book more roles, and launch your
career.
AUDITION TRACKING: WHAT IT IS + WHY YOU NEED TO DO IT
Actors run their own small businesses. It’s all on you; no one else is going to do the work for you. So treat your acting
career as seriously as you would any other business. Give it the respect and attention you’d like to see from the industry and the industry will respond by buying your product. One way to get a leg up? Audition tracking.
IS YOUR BODY LANGUAGE KEEPING YOU FROM BOOKING AUDITIONS?
As actors, behavior is our business. But when you say one thing and your body communicates something
else we believe what we see, not what you say. The non-verbal signals we send speak louder than words.
