VIFF'S SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION FORUM URGES ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION NOW IN TV AND FILM
As it goes without saying, any efforts to help preserve or save the environment, ecosystems, and climate are sorely needed. That urgency is reflected in this year's theme at Vancouver International Film Festival's Sustainable Production Forum, which is Action Now.

EMERGENCY BYLAWS PASSED AGAINST TORONTO STUDIO SALE IN BID TO SAVE 'HOLLYWOOD NORTH'
Toronto city council passed two emergency bylaws on Wednesday that prevent the sale of a longtime film studio to businesses not involved in the film industry for up to a year. The decision, the city says, is meant to protect an industry that contributes $2 billion to the local economy.

NETFLIX DEAL RECEIVES ROUGH RECEPTION AMONG CANADIAN CULTURAL LEADERS
This core philosophy has placed the streaming service in direct conflict with major parts of Canada's cultural industries, which have worked for decades with strict rules and regulations that include quotas for Canadian content.

FILM ACADEMY REVIEWING NETFLIX'S ELIGIBILITY AMID ANGST OVER STREAMING SERVICES
Some members challenge whether a Netflix movie that “buys” slots in theaters for only one week should be allowed to compete with conventional releases. An Academy committee is probing this issue with special focus on the possibility of a film winning both an Emmy and an Oscar in the same year.

ALBERTA GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES NEW FILM FUNDING MODEL
Ricardo Miranda, Minister of Culture and Tourism, has introduced a new Screen-Based Production Grant to replace the previous Alberta Production Grant. The Screen-Based Production Grant will make $45 million per year available to production companies working in Alberta – covering up to 30 per cent of eligible production expenditures.

TWO MORE GUILTY PLEAS IN PROSECUTION OF PAY-FOR-PLAY ACTING WORKSHOPS IN L.A.
While this law may have the desired intent of protecting aspiring actors from predatory practices in the management sector of the entertainment community, it was applied arbitrarily in this case, to prosecute persons and agencies that host productive, lawful, educational workshops that benefited many in the acting community.

HOLLYWOOD EXEC HARVEY WEINSTEIN TO TAKE LEAVE FOLLOWING SEXUAL HARASSMENT REPORT
Harvey Weinstein, the larger-than-life Hollywood executive and Oscar winner, is taking a leave of absence from his own company after an explosive exposé revealing decades of sexual harassment against women, from employees to actress Ashley Judd.

William B. Davis (X-Files’ Cigarette Smoking Man) will instruct this exclusive eight week scene study class at the school he founded: The William Davis Centre for Actors' Study at VanArts. The class will be limited to a maximum of 12 students with some previous training and/or work experience. Scenes will be chosen from plays and explored, worked & critiqued in class. Outside rehearsal time with scene partner will be required. A rare opportunity to work with this master teacher.

KIDS+TEENS FILM+TV ACTING AT BIZ STUDIO
September-November classes are registering now! Biz Studio students have about twice the one-on-one time with faculty as students at other schools, with a max of 6 students per class. We have a legacy of training young actors who go on to work in the industry, *outstanding* instructors, and a beautiful downtown campus inside a working film & TV casting studio.

ACTOR'S FOUNDRY SIMULATED AUDITION WORKSHOP
October 21st & 22nd 9am to 6pm
Actors receive their sides in advance​ and ​all actors work from the same sides.​  Actors will receive an "audition time" for Saturday morning​ and auditions will be taped, one-actor-at-a-time in the room with no adjustments.​  Entire class will study each audition. Discuss audition process, acting technique, specific actor critique.​ Then on Sunday new sides will be given ​and actors will audition for the class with adjustments.​

The 14th annual Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival features twelve days of music, stories, songs, poetry, cultural celebrations, films, theatre, dance, processions, spoken word, workshops, discussions, gallery exhibitions, mixed media, art talks, history talks and history walks. The theme of the 2017 Festival, Honouring Women of the Downtown Eastside, pays tribute to women from all walks of life in the Downtown Eastside past and present.

Celebrating the Best in Animation with a conference, film festival, career fair and more! This year’s 2-day conference shows off the whole scope of the animated film medium from around the world, bringing together talented artists, directors and studio executives to examine the range of animation, share their priceless experiences, and inspire the animation community.
