B.C. FILM PRODUCTION TO TOP $2.6B IN 2017, SETTING NEW RECORD
If
you’ve spotted one of the many crews set up around Metro Vancouver recently, it’s likely no surprise to you that B.C.’s film industry is booming. According to Creative BC, that’s not just movie magic: the latest numbers show motion picture productions are set to spend a record amount in the province this year.
BC FILM INDUSTRY PLEASED WITH FEDS' NETFLIX ANNOUNCEMENT
The head of BC’s film board says our province’s entertainment industry can only gain from the federal government’s Netflix announcement. As part of
the federal cultural policy, Heritage Minister Melanie Joly has announced a deal with Netflix that will set up a Canadian branch of operations for the company and commits Netflix to investing $500 million over five years in original productions in Canada.
B.C. KNOWLEDGE NETWORK PRESIDENT RAISES CONCERNS OVER NETFLIX DEAL
The president and C.E.O. of B.C.'s Knowledge Network says the new deal between American streaming company Netflix and the federal government
lets down Canada's film industry. The recent policy announcement allows Netflix to continue operations in Canada entirely tax free and outside regulations set by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC).
VANCOUVER ANIMATORS CLAIM THEY HAVEN'T BEEN PAID PROPER OVERTIME TO MEET TIGHT
DEADLINES

CREATING SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTIONS IN BRITISH COLUMBIA
Zena Harris, curator of the Sustainable Production Forum that runs on October 4 as
part of the 36th Annual Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF), talks to Jeremy Kay about best practices and how Vancouver aspires to be a leader in sustainability.
As new Culture Minister Lisa Beare remains mum on the status of the program,
producer Carlton Cuse reiterates its importance in attracting Hollywood productions.
FINALLY, A SHOW ABOUT ASIANS THAT GETS PAST THE STEREOTYPES
This is a show that has found success not because it's a story that only resonates with Asian immigrants, nor
does it strictly poke fun at Asian culture. It's a deeper look at a family that has been through financial and emotional hardship – with humour and grace. And that's something which Canadians of all stripes can relate to.
ARE YOU MORE COMMITTED TO YOUR CRAFT OR YOUR BRAND?
As an actor,
are you someone who is committed to developing the skills and artistry to play the widest possible range of roles with strength and believability? Or are you more concerned with your “brand”? The way you answer the question may tell you whether you’re more committed to your acting or to your marketing.
As a casting director, I wish more actors knew these two things. Not only would it help them feel more relaxed when they come in for auditions, but it would save time, both mine and theirs!
Where you are today is perfect. You’re enough as a person and you will be tomorrow. Start to love the current version of yourself and that just might be the secret to booking more work.
