For the 2016-17
fiscal year, film and TV productions spent an estimated $2.6 billion in B.C., an all-time high. That figure represents a more than 35 per cent increase in spending compared to the previous fiscal year, which saw $1.9 billion flow into the province.
HAUNTING NEW VANCOUVER-SHOT TV SERIES GHOST WARS GETS SET TO
SCARE
You wouldn’t have known it walking down Georgia Street, but this summer, downtown Vancouver’s Canada Post building housed all the traditional locales for a supernatural horror story. The run-down town pub, the experimental science lab, and the eerily lit church were all accounted for—and of course, all of them populated with wandering, pale-faced ghosts. This is Port Moore, Alaska, the setting for
Ghost Wars.
HBO’s Game of Thrones, which dominated last year’s Emmys with
23 nods and 12 trophies, including its second consecutive Best Drama award, fell outside the eligibility window for Emmy consideration this year. Now-finished Orphan Black wasn’t in the running for the same reason, depriving star Tatiana Maslany of the chance to repeat as Best Drama actress.
If you’re a Vancouver-based cinephile, this is the most wonderful time of the year for reasons beyond
the return of pumpkin spice lattes: the 2017 Vancouver International Film Festival is only days away, with its packed schedule of indie gems and Oscar hopefuls from all over the globe.
'RIVERDALE' CAR CRASH SHINES SPOTLIGHT ON DECADESLONG SAFETY ISSUES
The single-vehicle crash that destroyed Riverdale star K.J. Apa’s car last week left him without serious injuries, but others haven’t been so lucky in the
past, and the late-night incident shines a spotlight yet again on a decades-old problem of fatigue and late-night work in entertainment — and on the larger problem of overall safety in the industry.
STUDIO DOWNPLAYS CONCERNS ABOUT
LONG HOURS AFTER RIVERDALE STAR'S CAR CRASH
In a statement to CBC News, a spokesperson said the studio has a standard policy on set that if any cast or crew member feels tired or unsafe at any time after working, they can request a taxi, driver or hotel.

WHY CBC'S KIM'S CONVENIENCE IS PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT FOR VANCOUVER AT THIS POINT IN TIME
The success of CBC's comedy TV series Kim's Convenience could not have come at more crucial time for Vancouver—with the only regret being that it didn't arrive sooner. Amid racially charged debates over Vancouver's overheated real-estate market,
anti-Asian sentiment has risen to one of the most disconcerting levels in recent decades.
‘SUICIDE SQUAD’S ADAM BEACH ON WHY CASTING OF OTHERS FOR NATIVE AMERICAN ROLES IS SO HURTFUL
There is no need to cast non-Native performers and actresses in Native roles. This
is not 1950. The practice of whitewashing is unnecessary, unacceptable and discriminatory. It promotes the erasure of communities of color. Natives are often typecast in stereotypical roles or removed from the narrative entirely.
HOW TO GET ACTING WORK WHEN YOU LACK FORMAL TRAINING
It’s easy to fall into the trap of imagining an infinite pool of actors better trained, more experienced and more talented than you are. But as Napoleon put it, “Victory belongs to the most persevering.”
When
your guard is low and your hopes are high, it’s easy to spend money on things you don’t need or be convinced to do something that goes against your moral compass. Here are some of the common and not so common things actors may be "conned" into doing.
HOW TO MARKET YOURSELF AS AN ACTOR WITHOUT FEELING SLEAZY
It’s common to feel like acting and marketing yourself are diametrically opposed and completely incompatible. You might even think it’s gross to market yourself, like you’re “selling out” or somehow poisoning the craft itself. But nothing could be further from the truth. Here are some steps you can take to market yourself in a feel-good way, sans ick-factor.
