SUPERHEROES POWER A BUSY FILMING MONTH
Lots of lights, camera action in July, but film shooting in New West in 2017 not quite what it was last year.

MONSOON FESTIVAL OF PERFORMING ARTS BRINGS LOCAL, INTERNATIONAL SOUTH ASIAN TALENT CENTRE STAGE
In its second year, the Monsoon Festival of Performing Arts continues to spotlight South Asian talent in an industry where opportunities rarely escape from the realms of the Euro-centric model. As the largest minority group in Canada, it is alarming to see the lack of South Asian faces in the industry. Even when they are offered opportunities, their talents are “often tokenized and misunderstood.”

DANIEL DAE KIM, GRACE PARK REUNITE FOLLOWING HAWAII FIVE-0 EXIT
Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park, who exited Hawaii Five-0 last month amid controversy and contract disputes, reunited in Canada on Wednesday. Kim shared a photo of the two smiling alongside the harbor in Vancouver, Canada, with the caption, “Cousins #reunited. Until next time, #Vancouver!”

STAR-STRUCK IN QUALICUM: FILM CREWS TRANSFORM MID-ISLAND INTO QUALIWOOD
When the producers of Hallmark Channel’s TV series Chesapeake Shores were looking for seaside locations last year, they chose the Oceanside area between Nanaimo and Qualicum Beach to stand in for the show’s U.S. locales. This year, they returned to shoot Season 2, capturing the Island’s natural beauty as a backdrop.

KOOTENAY FILM INDUSTRY GATHERS MOMENTUM
At the end of September, the Civic Theatre is hosting a four-day professional development weekend with a pretty grandiose name: Kinesis, a Prologue to the Future of Kootenay Film. This pilot project is a collaboration between the Civic, Touchstones and Nelson Kootenay Lake Tourism — as well as the newly created Kootenay Screen Based Industry (KSBI), a group created in January 2017.

HOLLYWOOD, EVEN-FURTHER NORTH
Vancouver has been called Hollywood North since the 1970s. The cheap Canadian dollar, the varied landscape, the low population density and high availability of empty gravel parking lots makes B.C. a great place to film. The result has been a steady stream of movies and Hollywood stars parading through our communities, leaving a trail of encounters and stories in their wake.

PRODUCTION OF TV PILOTS DROPS TO SEVEN-YEAR LOW IN L.A., BUT REGION RETAINS ITS SHARE
Television pilot production in Los Angeles dropped to its lowest level in seven years, but the region managed to hold on to its portion of overall pilot shoots, according to a new report from FilmLA.

TRANSGENDER ACTORS PUSH FOR MORE INCLUSION ON TV
There are just 11 transgender actors in all of television. And three of them are on one show, Amazon's Transparent. GLAAD, the LGBTQ media advocacy organization, that tracks inclusion in media.The group's goals this season include stories that move beyond the transition narrative, casting transgender roles more authentically, and casting transgender actors in more diverse roles.

GAME OF THRONES'S SOPHIE TURNER: 'I GOT A JOB OVER A BETTER ACTRESS BECAUSE I HAD MORE FOLLOWERS'
Hollywood prides social media following over acting talent – or at least that's what Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner has experienced. The actress revealed in an interview with Porter magazine that she landed a part over a superior actress because she "had the followers".

The Cinematheque’s annual foray into the dark, desperate world of American film noir returns with eleven lurid classics from noir’s hard-boiled heyday. And again this year, we’ve added a small sidebar exploring noir’s surprisingly wide influence — this time on two spine-tingling standards of 1950s science-fiction.

MONSOON FESTIVAL OF PERFORMING ARTS
August 6-13
In its second year, The Monsoon Arts Festival runs August 6-13 in Vancouver and Surrey, with a deliberate spotlight on South Asian theatre. The Monsoon Arts Festival is unique, given that no other broadly-focused South Asian performing arts festival exists in Canada.

VANCOUVER QUEER FILM FESTIVAL
August 10-20
The 29th annual festival features more than 50 films along with 7 visiting filmmakers/directors, 19 local directors, and numerous local performing artists and free events, in addition to parties and talkback sessions.

The 2017 season features an exciting lineup of four classic Shakespeare plays (Much Ado About Nothing, The Winter's Tale, The Merchant of Venice, and The Two Gentlemen of Verona) plus a short-run contemporary drama (Shylock).
