NORTH VANCOUVER'S ANDRES JOSEPH STARS IN CBC'S 21 THUNDER
Set in Montreal, the fictional series goes
behind the scenes into the private lives of pro soccer players. Storylines laced with themes of love, crime, race, sex and athletic glory are woven into the show, which follows the Thunder U21’s star players on and off the field.
COULD WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES REVOLUTIONIZE THE OSCARS?
The argument goes like this: If we (not to mention the top critics) can’t tell where Serkis’s performance—everything from his timing, delivery of lines, facial expressions, business, and reactions to other actors—begins and
the digital part ends, how is it any different than when Heath Ledger was leveled with makeup and scars in to become the Joker in The Dark Knight? Where do we, and the Academy, draw that line?

'CAPTAIN MARVEL' AMONG BIG-BUDGET FILMS TO RECEIVE CALIFORNIA TAX
CREDIT
The 2015-16 fiscal year marked a major expansion for the seven-year-old tax credit program, aimed at halting the erosion of California-based production to states with bigger incentives, such as Georgia and New York. The annual allocation rose from $100 million to $330 million, and applications are ranked on how many jobs they will produce, rather than being selected by
lottery.
'GIRLS TRIP' BOX OFFICE BREAKS R-RATED COMEDY CURSE, PROVES POWER OF DIVERSITY
Universal president of domestic distribution Nick Carpou says it is certainly true that Hollywood has viewed
films with black leads as having limited appeal, but that times are changing.
Whenever discussing Kathryn Bigelow, writers are careful to put a caveat toward the beginning, almost as if an
official subtitle to her career: Kathryn Bigelow, The Only Woman to Win an Oscar for Best Director.
Short classes and workshops afford a limited time commitment and create a sense of intensity while still offering an educational
opportunity. But can these short-term formats really have a long-term impact?
One of the most popular comments that I hear from actors is that they are “surprised”‘ to find out that Casting Directors are rooting for them. The
audition room can be an intimidating place; you walk into a room filled with competitors, you go into an office where complete strangers are staring at you expectantly, then you have to be at your most open, most vulnerable as you perform the scene. No wonder it’s scary.
DO YOU REALLY HAVE TO MEMORIZE LINES FOR AN AUDITION?
Whether or not an actor has to
memorize lines for an audition is a question I get asked all the time. It’s a pretty simple and straightforward one, but the answer can be complicated.

FILM NOIR
August 3-24
The Cinematheque’s annual foray into the dark, desperate world of American film noir returns with
eleven lurid classics from noir’s hard-boiled heyday. And again this year, we’ve added a small sidebar exploring noir’s surprisingly wide influence — this time on two spine-tingling standards of 1950s science-fiction.
The 29th annual festival features more than 50 films along with 7 visiting filmmakers/directors, 19
local directors, and numerous local performing artists and free events, in addition to parties and talkback sessions.
The 2017 season features
an exciting lineup of four classic Shakespeare plays (Much Ado About Nothing, The Winter's Tale, The Merchant of Venice, and The Two Gentlemen of Verona) plus a short-run contemporary drama (Shylock).
