THE CRAZY RIDE OF MAKING A FILM IN 8 DAYS
Some creative people actually need a deadline. The challenge fuels them
and forces them to think deeply and act quickly, often resulting in fresh material. That's the sentiment shared by filmmakers and other artists who've all experienced Vancouver's annual Crazy8s film contest.

FILM ABOUT RACISM BASED ON PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, ACTOR-PRODUCER SAYS
Patrick Sabongui was one of the finalists in Crazy8s, the annual Vancouver-based filmmaking competition and festival. He has a long list of credits that includes hit television shows like 24, The Flash and Homeland, and big-budget movies like The 300 and Godzilla.
HOLLYWOOD NORTH: HOCKEY FILM HELLO DESTROYER LEADS B.C. NOMINEES FOR CANADIAN
SCREEN AWARDS

“There have been supports for tech with the Square One tech incubator, supports for the film industry with InFilm
(film commission) and developing a database, so really a wide range of things. Our focus is to be supporting growth sectors in the economy and emerging sectors of the economy.”
ALBERTA FILM INDUSTRY POISED TO BECOME NORTH AMERICAN PRODUCTION HUB, BUT CHANGES TO INCENTIVES NEEDED
Alberta is poised to become the next major hub for film and TV in North America, but will miss its chance if the province’s incentives aren’t quickly improved to compete with other jurisdictions.
CANADA FINALLY HAS A PERFORMANCE SERIES DEDICATED TO THE WORK OF DEAF ARTISTS
Theatre is, traditionally, deeply entwined with the act of
listening, as evidenced by the word audience — literally a group of people who hear something together. But Edmonton's SOUND OFF Festival is aiming to challenge that conceit. The brainchild of playwright Chris Dodd, the upstart event is Canada's first performance series dedicated exclusively to the work of deaf artists.
ACTORS MAY NO LONGER BE ABLE TO HIDE THEIR AGE ONLINE
For Hollywood’s vain actors, it might soon get harder to hide their age. No, they are not outlawing Botox or face-lifts — but a San Francisco federal judge appears close to tossing a state law that would require Web sites like IMDb to delete an actor’s date of birth if requested to do so.
“I wish I did have a trick to memorize lines. I often fantasize about having a photographic memory. Unfortunately for me the
only thing that works is hours and hours of saying them over and over and over again.”
Auditioning is the necessary beast on which the beginning of your acting career depends. So instead of seeing auditions as an emotional job interview, shift your perspective to see them for what they
really are: a chance to bring yourself to a new character, to do what you love in front of an attentive audience, and to possibly make some fans.
In your audition, you don’t have to be right. You don’t have to be on the front foot. You don’t have to deliver a dominant character if it’s not warranted. What you have to be is
remembered. And vulnerability can go a long way in delivering a lasting memory of your audition, far more than invincibility can.
