2017 MIGHT BE ANOTHER RECORD-BREAKING YEAR FOR LOCAL FILM INDUSTRY
Metro Vancouver’s film and TV industry is coming off a record-breaking year and signs indicate this year could be even bigger. “At this point there’s no sign of things slowing down,” says Prem Gill, with Creative BC which supports the local movie industry, as well as digital arts, video game, animation, music and magazine publishing businesses.

GENDER-FLUID CHILD ACTOR TO VIE IN MALE AND FEMAL CATEGORIES FOR BC’S LEO AWARDS
A gender-fluid 11-year-old Vancouver actor is eligible for consideration in both male and female performance categories at British Columbia's Leo Awards, the annual prize celebrating the province's film and TV industry. Vancouver actor Ameko Eks Mass Carroll's performance in the short film Limina has been accepted for consideration in male and female acting categories.

HOLLYWOOD NORTH: BUSY VANCOUVER ACTOR JACOB TREMBLAY TO CO-STAR IN THE PREDATOR
Vancouver actor Jacob Tremblay has joined the cast of The Predator, director Shane Black's sequel to the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger classic. Since his star-turning performance in Room, for which he won a Critic Choice Award and a Canadian Screen Award, the 10-year-old Tremblay has been busy making a slew of films with A-list co-stars.

WHITE ROCK AIMS TO BOOST FILM-INDUSTRY INTEREST
“There is nobody on city staff marketing White Rock as a filming destination,” [recreation and culture director Eric Stepura] told council at their Jan. 16 meeting. That’s about to change, following council’s adoption of Stepura’s recommendation that it allot $10,000 from the 2017 economic development budget to retain a movie 0industry location manager to shoot a professional-quality photo and video package to draw production business to the city.

THREE CANADIAN ANIMATIONS UP FOR OSCAR AWARD
Canada has a vibrant animation sector and three works with Canadian connections have been nominated for an Oscar award. Montreal animator Theodore Ushev told Canadian Press that he fainted when he learned his “Blind Vaysha” was nominated for best animated short. He reportedly ate three muffins to revive himself.

HOW THE ‘MULAN’ REBOOT HAS SOME ASIAN ACTORS HOPEFUL FOR THE END OF HOLLYWOOD WHITEWASHING
Recent debate about Hollywood whitewashing has sparked conversation on how difficult it is for Asian performers to land a role free of stereotypes—never mind a leading role in a blockbuster. But Disney's upcoming live action reboot of Mulan—which will reportedly feature an all-Chinese cast— could set a precedent on how Asian actors are cast in Hollywood films.

As an acting teacher, my job is to train young artists. In my thirty years of experience, I’ve been fortunate to work with some incredibly talented young actors. Unfortunately, talent and skill isn’t enough to win roles. Just because a young actor is the most talented one in the room, it’s not guaranteed they will get the job.

The Cold Reading Series (CRS) is committed to supporting and developing the talents of Vancouver’s story tellers – writers, actors, and musicians alike – by providing a forum where they can present their craft to a live audience and get instant feedback. 

GVPTA UNIFIED GENERAL AUDITIONS
Qualifiers: Register by Feb 1 (February 15-16) *required for actors who have not attended the previous UGAs.

UGAs: Register by March 1 (March 21-22)
The Greater Vancouver Professional Theatre Alliance produces the annual UGAs to provide an opportunity for Actors to audition once and be seen by a large number of artistic and freelance 
theatre directors who are currently casting for local theatre productions. Actors must be full union members or be invited through the qualifiers to attend the UGAs.

TOMO SURU PLAYERS PRESENTS: SPRING AWAKENING
Feb 7-19 | PAL Studio Theatre
Spring Awakening, the 2006 Tony Award winning musical, gets an unplugged rendition in February 2017. The high-energy rock tinged musical is presented with the cast providing most of the musical accompaniment. While electric guitar and keyboard are used, acoustic guitars and organic percussion performed by the cast make this an intimate and emotionally charged performance, providing a direct connection between the performers and audience.
