MOVIE
SHOOTS TURN TO ABBOTSFORD AS HOLLYWOOD NORTH EXPANDS
The dissatisfaction among some downtown merchants with filming in the area has shone a light on the dramatic increase in movie shoots taking place in Abbotsford this year.
Filming activity in the Coquitlam is up dramatically in 2016, an increase the city
is crediting to the low Canadian dollar and provincial tax incentives. 141 permits have been issued as of the end of August, while the city has received 290 inquiries.
NEW INVESTMENTS IN STUDIO SPACE SHOW B.C. FILM IS HERE TO STAY, SAYS INDUSTRY
In B.C.’s film industry, there have been ups and there have been downs. Right now, the sector is riding so high that both
local companies and Hollywood studios think it’s a good time to invest heavily in building out new production space.
BUSTLING LOCAL FILM INDUSTRY "ABSOLUTELY UNPRECEDENTED": DGC BC
The director’s guild made some considerable changes to entrance requirement earlier this year, in part to
make it easier to join the guild in the current industry.
B.C.'S KEVAN FUNK AND A MOB OF INSPIRED YOUNG FILMMAKERS ARE DESTROYING AT VIFF
It’s about looking to a new generation. There’s a real chance to cultivate audiences and to really
foster a culture that hasn’t exactly flourished in the past—an artistically driven culture rather than an industry-driven one. And obviously, in Vancouver, that’s all we’ve talked about: the industry.
STREAMS OF DREAMS: VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL REIMAGINED
VIFF executive director Jacqueline Dupuis is clearly excited at that prospect. Heading into her fifth year at VIFF’s helm, she’s also pleased about the new eight specific film streams replacing past multi-category sections.
NATIONAL ARTS
CENTRE UNVEILS $23-MILLION FUND TO SUPPORT CANADIAN ARTS
The National Arts Centre has lifted the lid on a major fundraising campaign that could become a significant force in commissioning new works from Canadians working in music, theatre and dance.
HERITAGE MINISTER SAYS SHE WILL NOT REVERSE CANCON RULES FOR TV INDUSTRY
Federal Heritage Minister Mélanie Joly says Canada’s TV production sector, alarmed at new CRTC regulations that reduce the need to hire Canadians to obtain funding, should not count on her for any immediate help to reverse the situation.
ZACHARY QUINTO ON WHAT HE MISSES ABOUT AUDITIONING AND LIVE THEATER
“I loved auditioning because it was just an opportunity to act.
Whether or not I got the job was the next hurdle, but the idea that I would get to act that day was the thing that excited me the most about it.”
Theatre is all about telling a story. Transporting the viewer to someplace else, far away for just a few hours. While your performance is what will ultimately sell the story, your appearance is part of that package.
Gone are the bad old days of branding yourself as the funny best friend, goofy sidekick or redneck construction worker and thinking that “playing your brand” will be enough to book the job. This means that actors have to go deeper than ever before in their auditions.
Whether you’re going in for a theater, TV, or film audition, chances are you’re going to be reading excerpts from the project in front of its creators and/or casting directors. These materials, known as sides, are the actor’s greatest tool in showing off versatility, flexibility, and clarity in choices.
Remember, although auditioning has a lot of unknown variables that are completely out of your control, when you empower yourself from the moment you get the appointment, you’re setting yourself up for success.
