MOVIE MAGIC: PUSH FOR VICTORIA MOVIE STUDIO INTENSIFIES

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A DIFFICULT ACTRESS VS. A DIFFICULT ACTOR
There seems to be a bit of a difference between what behaviors mark a woman as “difficult” versus a man, and the
ramifications (or lack thereof) of being difficult. Here is who comes up in a cursory Google search of difficult actresses and difficult actors and what “difficult” means for each.
'WHEN YOU CRY, YOU REALLY CRY': THE EMOTIONAL TOLL OF STAGE ACTING
Actors have to – that’s the job. But that’s not to say it doesn’t take a toll. As audiences, we look on, invest and exhale a cathartic sigh as we head home to bed, safe in the knowledge that it was all just make-believe and pretence. Only, of course, it’s not. Not entirely.
Method acting is over. Jared Leto’s Joker is the latest evidence that the prestige of method acting has dimmed—thanks to the technique’s overuse by those seeking award-season glory or a reputation boost, as well as its history of being shaped by destructive ideas of masculinity.
We asked Backstage Expert and acting coach Anthony Meindl (Anthony Meindl’s Actor Workshop) about how to know when it’s time to move on to another class, and he reminds actors that it’s about the work and the challenge both.
Whether you’re an actor, writer, musician, filmmaker, or any other profession in the entertainment industry, being a creative type isn’t always easy. We’re constantly pushing ourselves to create something new, but what if you’re stuck? Sometimes, motivation and inspiration don’t just show up. You’ve got to go out and find them.

UPCOMING EVENTS
TREMORS
August 11-20
Rumble Theatre is thrilled to present the 2016 edition of Tremors, our festival of emerging talent. We’ve selected three outstanding
scripts (Dry Land by Ruby Rae Spiegel, Better Angels: A Parable by Andrea Scott, and Bull by Mike Bartlett) and assembled a company of emerging artists to direct, design and perform each show.
The Vancouver Queer Film Festival celebrates the best in independent queer cinema and facilitates a unique community space through a
variety of performances, panels and workshops. The 2016 Festival is set to showcase over 80 films from 20 countries, with themes ranging from queer troublemakers, indigenous voices, and queer freedoms.
South Asian Canadians are the largest visible minority group in Canada, yet a simple scan of Vancouver’s performing arts community suggests that there are very few South Asian theatre professionals currently working in our industry. This festival is unique, given
that no other broadly-focused South Asian performing arts festival exists in Canada.
Erin Mussolum, Project Manager of STORYHIVE, and Lizzy Karp, Marketing and Communications Manager of STORYHIVE, will be chatting about the TELUS STORYHIVE Digital Shorts Female Director edition which will be awarding 30 $10k grants for these short films.
The Film and Media Showcase is a forum for members of Cineworks, WIFTV and DOC BC that provides filmmakers with an opportunity to share their work with other artists, across genres and in a variety of lengths, in a space dedicated to discovery, discussion and inspiration. Each screening will be followed by a question and answer session with creators, with informal conversation and networking afterwards.
