IS SUPERGIRL ABOUT TO LAND IN VANCOUVER?
Vancouver’s comic book universe, which already includes Arrow, The Flash and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, may be expanding with news that Supergirl may be heading this way.

VANCOUVER MAYOR CONCERNED ABOUT CUT TO B.C. FILM INDUSTRY TAX CREDIT
Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson is raising concerns about the provincial government’s plan to trim tax credits for B.C.’s booming film and TV production sector – making him the highest-profile critic yet of the cost-cutting measures.

HOLLYWOOD NORTH | MOVIE LEGEND CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER IN VANCOUVER FILMING 'BOUNDARIES'
Canadian film legend Christopher Plummer stars in Boundaries, a new film from writer/director Shana Feste (Endless Love), which began production in Vancouver on Monday. Shooting is scheduled to wrap up on June 2.

2016 LEO AWARDS NOMINEES ANNOUNCED IN WAKE OF PROVINCIAL FUNDING CUTS
The nominees for the 18th annual LEO Awards were announced honouring the highest level of achievement in domestic film and television production in British Columbia’s massive industry. 

FILM CUT GOOD FOR VALLEY
An announcement by the provincial government to cut film and TV industry tax credits by five per cent is good news for the industry in the Okanagan. Okanagan film commissioner Jon Summerland, says, despite the tax credit cut from 33 to 28 per cent, additional regional tax credits in the Okanagan will make this area even more attractive. There is an additional six per cent for distance regions, such as the Okanagan.

CANADIAN ACTRESS EMILY VANCAMP FINDS HER FOCUS THANKS TO CAPTAIN AMERICA
Last year, the Canadian actress wrapped portraying the flawed heroine Emily Thorne on the popular dramatic series Revenge. Now she returns to the Marvel Universe playing Agent Sharon Carter in Captain America: Civil War.

EMMA THOMPSON AND MICHAEL CAINE PUT YOUNG ‘SOCIAL MEDIA ACTORS’ ON BLAST
The attempts to gauge popularity via social media aren’t new, in fact, during the mid ’00’s many bands and musical acts were signed to record contracts according to how many MySpace fans they had. On that note, maybe we should rethink how we view social media popularity and should look for people who actually cultivate their talents.

All the arguments in the world don’t change the fact that Hollywood offers very few roles to Asian actors, and when one comes along, they hire a white actor to do it, for whatever the reasons. Until that mindset can change, and the studios do something to stop this practice (Remember ‘The Last Airbender’? ‘Aloha’?) I will continue to speak out.

SUMMER FILM+TV ACTING INTENSIVES FOR KIDS+TEENS
Summer Intensives are a chance for students to see the kind of progress they can make when they devote 100% of their energy to acting. As with all Biz Studio programs, summer students have about twice the one-on-one time with faculty as students at other schools (max of 6 students per class).
Each week also features workshops with local casting directors. Intensives run July 11th-15th and 25th-19th and August 8th-12th and 22nd-26th.

DOXA DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL
May 5-15
The 15th Annual DOXA Festival features 85 films and 78 screenings, including one World Premiere and 21 Canadian Premieres. Some featured screenings include Aim for the Roses (featuring some local actors) and Pistol Shrimps (featuring  Aubrey Plaza of Parks and Recreation). An expanded Industry program rounds out the festival with a focus on distributors, politics in film, and documentary editing.

IGNITE YOUTH FESTIVAL
May 17 – 21
Every year, for one week in May, The Cultch is taken over and transformed by young people. Hundreds of youth are involved in what has grown to be Vancouver’s largest youth-driven arts festival. The festival includes showcases in music, dance, and spoken word, the world premiere of three one-act plays, a visual arts exhibit, variety shows featuring improv, drag, circus arts, and much more. All of this is created by local artists between the ages of 13-24.
