Workshops have been part of Hollywood's casting system for decades, but exchanging money for the prospect of employment remains illegal in California. The Krekorian Talent Scam Prevention Act, which was passed in 2009, specifically outlaws workshops and casting directors from charging or attempting to charge an artist for an audition or employment opportunity.
