VANCOUVER-SHOT MOTIVE RETURNS TO STAND-ALONE MURDER MYSTERIES FOR FINAL SEASON
The popular “whydunnit” show, where the detectives try to connect the dots between a murderer and its victim each week, makes its return to TV screens nationwide on March 22.
In 2007, UBC considered axing the UBC Film Production program due to curriculum and funding concerns. Alumni from the program—which began in 1969 before
Hollywood North was born—rose up to defend it, and launched a campaign to save it. Their efforts were successful—the program was reinstated and restructured.
As Vancouver’s film productions run out of space, they’re setting up studios in unconventional locations such as warehouses, an abondoned post office – even a bingo
hall.
BIG PICTURE: VICTORIA-RAISED SCREENWRITER BEHIND ‘MOST SCOTTISH FILM’
It isn’t as surprising as you might think that the screenwriter and co-producer of
what IndieWire calls “the most Scottish film of 2016” is a Canadian. Victoria-raised Richard Cowan, whose grisly black comedy The Legend of Barney Thomson opens today, has Scottish roots, after all.
Two encounters set me thinking afresh about the process of playwriting. Can it be taught? Should it be? Surely all actors and other theatre professionals should have detailed knowledge of it?
The author,
producer and filmmaker talks about his career and how starting out as a young entertainment writer led to much, much bigger things for him and why being open to change is what made it possible.
NOW PLAYING IN HOLLYWOOD: A BATTLE OVER THE FUTURE OF MOVIES
The Screening Room, a startup backed by Napster co-founder Sean Parker and music executive Prem Akkaraju, has sent tremors through the movie industry since word

In the RSC’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream: A Play for the Nation, amateur actors feature alongside their professional peers: innovative theatre often has community involvement at its heart.
Simply having an
agent/manager does not make you more valuable as an actor. Nor should you stick around with the belief that there is nothing better out there for you. These are murky waters and confusing situations, and this is a decision only you can make, and it’s one best made by listening to your gut.
One of the most common problems I find with novice actors is that they don’t understand how physical acting truly is. I don’t just mean on stage in a musical or in a boxing movie. You must always really connect through your whole body and express yourself with this wonderful tool—the body—just as you do in real life.

Nonverbal communication makes up anywhere from 65–95 percent of our communication. An audition requiring only a reaction from you brings it to 100 percent. Since we are in the communication business, it makes sense that all actors master this nonverbal
language.
