VANCOUVER AND CANADIAN OSCAR NOMINATIONS: THE REVENANT, ROOM, AND MORE
While Leonardo DiCaprio devoted some of his Golden Globes acceptance speech to thanking First Nations people, The Revenant can also thank numerous Canadians, including several locals, for its lead at the Oscar nominations.

2016 SET TO BE ANOTHER INCREDIBLE YEAR FOR FILM PRODUCTION IN BC
There is no sign of the industry slowing down in 2016 and added incentives like the province’s film tax credit are helping production companies choose BC for shooting locations. New content platforms like Netflix are also helping create jobs.

FIFTY SHADES OF GREY SEQUELS TO BEGIN SHOOTING IN FEBRUARY
Everyone’s favorite CEO Christian Grey returns to begin shooting in Vancouver alongside his lover Anastasia Steele. Production on the last two installments is set to take place from February till July. 

VANCOUVER’S PUSH FESTIVAL AIMS TO HELP REFUGEES ADAPT TO CANADIAN LIFE
This week, Christine Marie Gamboa met Ali Tisso. Gamboa, who goes by Tin, is a dancer and Tisso is a Syrian refugee who has been in the Vancouver area for three months. Later this month, they will take in a show together at the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival.

JORDAN BATEMAN: IT’S TIME TO WEAN FILM INDUSTRY OFF CORPORATE WELFARE
The B.C. film business is booming and industry insiders are “just licking our chops” at the number of Hollywood productions heading north. Unfortunately, that means B.C. taxpayers are about to get dinged with an even bigger bill — a historic amount of film subsidies.

THEATRE DIRECTOR RECOVERING AFTER STABBING IN TORONTO
Glynis Leyshon was attacked by a man wearing a black balaclava in the Summerhill Gardens area of Toronto on Dec. 15. Her torso was punctured four times with what she believes was a box cutter. Her right knuckle was broken and her arms were slashed. Her purse, wallet and cellphone were stolen.

CANADA COUNCIL’S DIVERSITY FOCUS BRINGS NEW OPPORTUNITIES, CHALLENGES
The Canada Council for the Arts is getting a new funding model in April of 2017. As details of this shift have started to emerge in recent weeks, the most striking change may be the direct tying of diversity to funding for large arts organizations for the first time since the Canada Council was established in 1957.

REVENANT DIRECTOR CALLS FOR MORE DIVERSITY IN FILM
Academy Award winning director Alejandro González Iñárritu has criticised Hollywood for its lack of diversity as once again no one of colour has been nominated in the main Oscar categories.

Finding the positive choice in a scene is the most helpful and interesting choice you can make. Always look for the agreement in the scene; it wins the day.
