THE FIGHT TO SAVE CALIFORNIA'S SPECIAL EFFECTS INDUSTRY In the mid-1990s, foreign governments began offering U.S. studios lucrative tax breaks to ditch Southern California and shoot movies abroad, which is why so many U.S. movies are filmed in Canada. Starting in 2007, the U.K. offered tax credits on visual effects, too. That set off a competition among nations to attract U.S. digital production. Naturally, studios are forgoing domestic effects houses for cheaper foreign ones. http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2014-08-06/hollywood-visual-effects-artists-seek-trade-law-protection
