CANADIAN STAR SMULDERS IN DARK ON OWN PROJECTS
Canadian actress Cobie Smulders is spotlighted in two franchises with intensely passionate fan bases - the rom-sitcom "How I Met Your Mother" and superhero blockbuster "The Avengers" - but when it comes to the details of either project, she insists she's kept firmly in the dark.

SAVE BC FILM: VANCOUVER LOBBY HELPS LOCAL BIZ
Despite the dire conditions from earlier this year, Vancouver's biz has actually picked up a bit. Current numbers show that production is largely unchanged from last year's levels, according to Richard Brownsey, CEO of Creative BC, a new agency that amalgamates the B.C. Film Commission and B.C. Film + Media. Thirty new productions are filming or about to start.

SAG-AFTRA, WGA SUPPORT APPEAL OF VERDICT IN IMDB AGE CASE
SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America, West are backing actor Junie Hoang's appeal of the verdict in her age discrimination lawsuit against the entertainment industry website IMDb. In April, a jury ruled in favor of IMDb and found that the company did not violate its privacy policy in connection with Hoang, who is appealing the ruling on the grounds she did not get a fair trial.

CASTING DIRECTOR BERNARD TELSEY ON CHANGING HIS MIND ABOUT ACTORS
"I love when I see an actor in a show, and I change my mind," he says. "Sometimes it takes a performance you saw that person do, and you think, Wow, I didn't know that actor had that in them! I have a whole office of many casting directors here, and I'm the first to say, 'You know that woman I said I didn't want to see anymore? Now I can't wait to see her!' "

IT'S BEEN A BANNER YEAR FOR BLACK-THEMED FILMS, BUT IS HOLLYWOOD REALLY CHANGING?
This fall has been a banner season for films of racial struggle told without white protagonists and largely by black directors. As one of the stars of the Civil Rights history Lee Daniels' The Butler, Oprah Winfrey is a proud player in a rare moment for African-Americans at the movies. But she and many others have tired of celebrating occasional aberrations of what should be Hollywood's regular output.
