DISNEY SHUTS DOWN PIXAR CANADA'S VANCOUVER STUDIO
In a surprise move, Disney has shut down its Pixar Canada animation studio in Vancouver, laying off 100 people. The closure is a blow to Vancouver's aspirations to develop its high-tech movie production sector and comes just three years after Disney's much ballyhooed entry into Canada.

HOLLYWOOD'S CULTURE OF INDULGENCE COMES WITH A PRICE
Should you ever have the misfortune to stumble onto a godawful 1974 movie called The Klansman, it will quickly become evident that Richard Burton is drunk on screen. As for co-star Lee Marvin, although he doesn't quite match Burton's condition of rheumy-eyed catatonia, he gives every indication of suffering from a monstrous hangover.

VIFF DIRECTOR STEPPING DOWN AFTER 26-YEAR RUN
After 26 years as Director of the Vancouver International Film Festival, Alan Franey has announced he is stepping down from the role. Franey said he hopes to remain "very much involved" with the festival, but wants to focus on programming.
