Vancouver Actor's Guide Newsletter & Special Announcement - Apr 8 2013

Published: Mon, 04/08/13

Hi, .

Do you remember the last newsletter when I mentioned about those celebrity audition tapes being auctioned off?  Well, they changed their mind... after much controversy. Not only was it unethical but it was against union rules.  Read these two articles about audition room privacy, and the article about the withdraw of the auction items.

Ok. Now onto the big announcement. I mentioned I was going to do.
SPECIAL EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT
Casting By
Production Heads Network Inc (the official company that runs Vancouver Actor's Guide) and DOXA Documentary Film Festival is proud to partner up to present the Vancouver-premiere of Tom Donahue's feature documentary, Casting By.

(Full disclosure: I'm currently the Executive Director at DOXA)

Ever since I watched this film a few months ago, I couldn't wait to present this for all of you to see. Did you know that the role of the Casting Director pretty much started out in New York?  Do you know the name, Marion Dougherty?  Well, you should and you will find out what kind of impact she had to the whole industry of casting.

This film is a such a brilliant look into the role of a Casting Director and their relationship with the actor.  Marion's skills gave her the ability to give so many now-famous actors their first break.  The film includes interviews with Glenn Close, Dustin Hoffman, Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, Woody Allen, Diane Lane, Bette Midler, and so many more.

The screening will take place on Saturday May 4, 2:00pm at the Rio Theatre. We are planning a post-film discussion as well so you won't want to miss this event.

Tickets are $12 but you will be required to purchase one-time 2013 DOXA Festival membership for $3. You can buy your membership at the door (cash only) or bundled with your online ticket order.

PLEASE NOTE: You must be 18 years or older to attend this screening. No exceptions. This film has not been rated by Consumer Protection BC and under provincial law, you must be a member of the DOXA society and be 18 years or older.

We expect this screening to sell out very fast.

Go watch the trailer and get your tickets through the DOXA website.

WHY YOUR SHOES ARE IMPORTANT IN AN AUDITION
I'm going to give you the secret to really feeling your character when you're on stage, on a set, or in an audition. It's so simple you'll kick yourself that you didn't think of it. Shoes. Yes, shoes! The right shoes will plant you so deeply in your character, it'll be hard to walk away. The wrong shoes will screw you up so badly you'll fall on your face. Literally!

HOW TO GET TO THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM IN YOUR AUDITIONS
It's not enough to say, "I'll never do that again." We have to know exactly what we did and more importantly, why we did it. What was the cause of the behavior?
