Vancouver Actor's Guide Newsletter - Jan 21 2013

Hi ,

It's been an interesting week in the world of arts and culture in Vancouver. I was at the opening gala for the PuSh Festival last week and during the festival's Executive Director, Norman Armour's opening remarks, he talked about the "under-capitalization of our arts community" driven by the fact that cultural spaces and organizations in this city have been closing down. That touches on one part of the current conversation happening in this city.

And the other part, we have the SAVE BC FILM petition (currently at more than 23,000 signatures) and the scheduling of the Film Industry Town Hall meeting on Tuesday. The discussion surrounds the need for tax credits to be more competitive with other regions so it can bring back the billion-dollar industry that employs thousands of people directly, and the broader financial impact to the companies and service industries that benefit from those productions when they call Vancouver home.

Those two pieces are being discussed a lot in their own circles. It's not news that the film industry and the theatre/arts industry don't always run in the same circles. They tend to fight their own fights. I don't say it to make it seem like it's a bad thing. It is what it is. But it's been interesting to see how the movement around the Waldorf Hotel and the Save BC Film campaigns are, what seems to me, running parallel but ever so interconnected.

The core of it is around how our society, including our government officials, view the creative sector that we've built in this province over the years. What is the value of investing in the non-profit arts and for-profit film industries? There's room for both. They operate on two very different business models. And I think that there are things we can learn from both industries and I'd love to see them work together more in the future. Although, I'm not sure exactly what that would look like.

I'll add that I'm not saying that the two industries are competing against each other. It's just an observation of the simultaneous battles that are happening right now for two critical industries that make this province and region so awesome to live in.

B.C. MOVIE BUSINESS FEELING SQUEEZE
The B.C. government is working on ways to hold onto movie, TV and video game production, as Hollywood shifts work to other provinces and countries that give attract them with generous subsidies and tax breaks. BRANDING CAMPAIGN NEEDED TO BOOST B.C.'S CREATIVE SECTOR, SAYS REPORT
A new report by a Simon Fraser University professor says a strategic branding plan would give a much-needed boost to the creative sector in B.C. The report says the sector employs 85,000 people and contributes $4 billion annually to the economy, and that per-capita spending on culture in B.C. is among the lowest of the provinces and that there has been a lack of statistical studies of the sector at the provincial level.

WHY ACTORS ACT AGAINST THEIR BEST INTEREST
We all, at various detours of our journeys, pull ourselves into these destructive weigh-stations of negative reflection. Yet when that nagging inner-voice routes its phantom calling to our cranium, we sometimes have the tendency to wallow in the false comfort of empty self-pity. There is no substance within the wretched thoughts to offering the soul healthy nourishment.

CREATE NOW, CRITIQUE LATER
When addressing the life of the creative person in Hollywood-a writer, actor, director, etc.-there is wisdom in taking the "long view" regarding one's career. In other words, to remember that the ups and downs will smooth out over the years, and that a consistent, long-term commitment to artistic growth and the development of craft is what provides the ultimate satisfaction. However, real creativity only occurs in the here-and-now.
