MARK WAHLBERG CALLS ON OTTAWA TO SUPPORT FILM PRODUCTION
Actor and producer Mark Wahlberg is calling on the Canadian government to lend more support to film productions, after cutting federal tax incentives that once drew Hollywood projects north. He said some of his best years in the film industry have been spent shooting in Canada, but a steady reduction in government tax credits for projects means many of those same movies would no longer be shot here.

HAROLD AND KUMAR'S JOHN CHO INHALES COMMUNAL CANADIAN SPIRIT ON B.C. FILM SET
The mechanics of making a movie are generally the same just about anywhere you go, but American actor John Cho discovered a significant difference between shooting a big studio picture in L.A. and a small independent film on the outskirts of Vancouver. "If I may generalize about your culture, there's a sense that we're all in it together," says Cho from the Mission, B.C., set of That Burning Feeling.

ALLIANCE FOR ARTS AND CULTURE APPLAUDS NEW GRANT FUNDING IN VANCOUVER BUDGET
A $300,000 increase to arts, cultural and social grants proposed in next year's city budget is being commended by Rob Gloor, the executive director of the Alliance for Arts and Culture. "The increase is modest, but encouraging, and I personally hope that the increased funds would be directed to enhancing the existing programs that are providing excellent support to the sector and are under high demand," he said.

THE L.A. COMPLEX CANCELLED
Like most Hollywood dreams, The L.A. Complex is dying a slow and quiet death. The critically-loved but little-watched Canadian soap about a group of mostly-Canadian actors chasing their dreams in La La Land has reportedly been dropped by its Canadian broadcaster, Bell Media.

FILM'S PROMISE IN FIRST MINUTES, SAYS WHISTLER FILM FESTIVAL JUROR
It's a good thing Liane Balaban enjoys watching movies. Sometimes, the Toronto-born, LA-based actor will watch them for 10 hours at a time -- mostly because it's part of her job. "You can literally see within the first three minutes whether the film holds promise," says the Supernatural regular. "After watching so many films you realize that the average person's attention span is precious, so you have to grip them."
