INDUSTRY NEWS

GUMMER WEARS HEART IN SLEEVE IN EMILY OWENS M.D.
In the kind of coincidence that rarely happens in life -- but happens all the time in prime-time TV melodramas -- Owens discovers that both her high-school nemesis, and her medical-school crush, are interns at the same hospital. Shot in Vancouver and stars Meryl Streep's daughter Mamie Gummer, Emily Owens M.D. bows Tuesday on CTV Two and The CW.

MACHINIMA EXPANDS BEYOND GAME ENGINES, STICKS WITH VIDEO GAMES
But while the roots of Machinima lie in videos created with game engines, the company's chair and CEO, Allen DeBevoise, foresees a much broader future. "We've seen them do incredible things," he says. "Once you have an audience, you want to give them something unique and special." Something like Mortal Kombat: Legacy, a live-action web series that premiered on Machinima in April 2011 and shot in Vancouver.

HOW TO MAKE A CASTING DIRECTOR'S DAY
There are volumes on what it means to be creative. Let me add two more metaphors to the canon. To be an actor means to play in your own sandbox, on cue, under pressure, in front of a bunch of people who need to be reminded of their own, often misplaced sandboxes. Here comes the second metaphor: Be the host of the party, rather than the guest.

HOLLYWOOD NORTH GEST FILM AND TV PRODUCTION OUTPOST IN NORTHERN ONTARIO
Canada's long-established reputation as a backlot for the Hollywood studios in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal has been bolstered by the launch of Northern Ontario Film Studios complex in Sudbury, Ontario.

CAN ACTORS LOSE TOO MUCH WEIGHT FOR ROLES?
For actors, suffering for one's art usually means weight gain, rather than weight loss - think Robert De Niro in Raging Bull, or Renée Zellweger in Bridget Jones's Diary. But recently, the reverse has been true.

HIGH-TECH SEWAGE SYSTEM TO HEAT THEATRE
By the time Fiddler on the Roof hits the MainStage in December, the warmth audiences and actors feel at Gateway Theatre could be coming from an unlikely source. The city-owned theatre will soon be home to the first renewable energy technology of its kind in Canada--one that uses sewage to generate heat.

DENMAN CINEMAS REBORN AT THE RAJA
One of the advantages for the new management is the existing condition of the Raja, which was showing Bollywood movies up until 2011. "I can tell you that it's in a much better state than Denman was when we started out," Denman Cinemas manager Naz Jamshedian said, adding that "it has a balcony--I always wanted a theatre with a balcony!"

CLASSIC HOLLYWOOD: CICELY TYSON WILL NEVER SETTLE
Cicely Tyson has refused to compromise during nearly six decades in film, turning down roles she thought were two-dimensional, stereotypical depictions of African American women.

MAGGIE SMITH ATTACKS HOLLYWOOD'S OBSESSION WITH YOUTH
The Downton Abbey actor claims studios treat audiences like 'five-year-olds' and an older demographic should be catered for.

HOW ONE ASPIRING FILMMAKER BROUGHT THE PERSONAL TO THE PROFESSIONAL
I grew up wanting to make movies because I dreamed of creating a world that made sense to me -- a world where even the most overwhelming conflict could be resolved, and a lesson could always be learned. So, naturally, when I finally struck out to make my first film, I ended up in the Middle East.
