SUPER-HERO SHOW 'ARROW' AIMS FOR REALITY
"We want to do a comic book show that's sort of grounded in reality," title character actor Stephen Amell explains at a promotional stop in Toronto earlier this year. "Sort of like the Chris Nolan universe in 'Batman' where if I get hit with a bullet I can die. I don't have super powers and nobody in our show has super powers, as yet, and I think that the plan is that nobody will. So (it's) dark, yes, but it's dark because it's real."

CANADIAN CROSSMEDIA CROSSES BORDERS
While much of the world is still argues about what "transmedia" exactly means, some countries have been producing it in quantity for some time. One of the leaders among these is Canada. Since the 1990s, Canada's government funding bodies have aggressively supported and promoted innovation in digital media, and the country is now the home of some of the top transmedia producers in the world.

CANADIAN STAGE'S NEW MANTRA: LESS IS MORE
Since taking control of Toronto's largest non-for-profit theatrical laboratory three years ago, mad scientist (aka artistic and general director) Matthew Jocelyn has aimed and fired his shrink-ray gun at just about everything. Max Reimer, the former artistic director of the Vancouver Playhouse, is agnostic about theatre companies "shrinking on purpose."

"This year's increase of LGBT characters on television reflects a cultural change in the way gay and lesbian people are seen in our society," said Herndon Graddick, president of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. He added: "As audiences tune into their favourite programs, they expect to see the same diversity of people they encounter in their daily lives."

LOCAL FILMMAKER GOES TO HELL AND BACK
It's a film chock-full of doctrine, history and scripture but reasonably laid out, meaning that you can follow along whether you know your bible or you don't. Jumping between locations in the U.S., Israel and the Fraser Valley, Abbotsford filmmaker Kevin Miller presents a provocative, ultimately hopeful documentary sure to pique the interest of atheists and believers alike.

'ARGO' MAKES CANADA COOL, FOR ONCE
General ignorance about Canada exists in culture across the board, which is a sad reality, but it makes Ben Affleck's Argo all the more important in the grand scheme of things. For once, Canada comes across as clever, devious, innovative -- but most of all, awesome.
