INDUSTRY NEWS

B.C. TEEN TO CO-STAR WITH CHARLIE SHEEN
Daniela Bobadilla was born in Mexico City, but grew up in North Vancouver and Coquitlam. Two years ago she moved to Los Angeles, where she landed a role in the NBC series Awake. Before it had even aired, the 19-year-old was cast as Sheen's daughter in Anger Management.

QUEER YOUTH FIND EXPRESSION THROUGH DANCE IN MACHiNENOiSY'S LAW OF PROXIMITY
In some ways, dance is the ultimate act of trust: someone else is holding you, catching you as you bend backward, or lifting you, and you need to know that they won't let you fall. That idea is being taken to new levels in a project MACHiNENOiSY is doing with a group of eight queer youths between 19 and 24 years old--a full spectrum of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, many of whom have never danced before.

IN HOLLYWOOD, TIMING IS EVERYTHING - EVEN WITH STEVEN SPIELBERG AS A MENTOR
How good is Steven Spielberg, really, for a young up-and-comer's career? Ask Will Bigham, winner of the 2007 Fox reality show "On the Lot," who counts Spielberg as a mentor and Paramount chief Adam Goodman as a "big fan."

DANGER GRAY, TO BE SHOT IN VANCOUVER THIS FALL
The 90-minute pilot, created by Jim Danger Gray, will be shot in Vancouver this fall, and comes one day after THR broke the news that Syfy will be teaming with M. Night Shyamalan for the Proof pilot, also likely to be produced in Canada.

HEY! WHERE ARE THE SHOWS FOR US OTHER GIRLS?
Where were the stories about us? I felt the same disconnect after the April debut of HBO's now Emmy-nominated Girls. The show led to a collective Internet spewing over its varying degrees of myopia; loudest were those who felt let down by the lack of diversity. Created by and starring 26-year-old Lena Dunham, the show delineates the lives of four smart but cellulite-y, moneyed but struggling twentysomething white women in New York.

HOLLYWOOD FLEXIBLE WITH FILM TRILOGY MATH
Although three-and-out works as a baseball metaphor, basketball offers a more appropriate analogy, given the uneven application of the rule of three to studio franchises, creating headaches for those responsible for keeping money and merchandising flowing. Simply put, if the movie business is going to hit a higher percentage with its long-range game of extending franchises, studios are going to need some three-pointers.

WHY WE SHOULD BRING BACK THE ARTS OLYMPICS
From 1912 to 1948 the Olympic Games had a subdivision dedicated to handing out medals in arts events, like literature and architecture and visual arts and music (ironic for the latter, since this year musicians were barely paid to participate even on the sidelines.) Is it crazy to imagine us bringing them back?

NETWORKS STRUGGLE TO APPEAL TO HISPANICS
The discrepancy between English and Spanish language shows is most acute among shows that are scripted in English. The issue, many viewers and critics argue, is that there still hasn't been the Hispanic equivalent of "The Cosby Show," meaning a show that deals with Latino culture in a way that doesn't offend viewers with crude stereotypes.

The Universal Film Manufacturing Company incorporated on April 30, 1912, the result of a merger between a number of independent companies that had been battling Thomas Edison's Motion Picture Patents Trust. Universal would go on to become the oldest continuously operating film producer and distributor in the United States. In an industry defined by change, Universal's spinning globe logo has remained, along with its back lot, and tour, in Universal City, California.
