BEN RATNER'S JOURNEY DOWN RIVER
Ratner says he's been moving the cinematic equivalent of a king size futon of late with Down River, a new feature he wrote and is currently directing in Vancouver. A small-scale drama about a free-spirit who mentors several young artists before checking out, the film puts Helen Shaver centreframe as Pearl, a character largely inspired by Ratner's friend and teacher, Babz Chula.

LOVE OF FILM SPURS REEL CAUSES' MOHAMED ELAB
Elab is the founder of Reel Causes, a nonprofit society that hosts monthly screenings with all proceeds going to organizations engaged in good works. "We're a secular, nonpartisan group," he says. NBA STAR STEVE NASH WILL FOCUS ON FILM CAREER WHEN LAKERS CONTRACT EXPIRES

Telefilm Canada says the Canuck film industry is growing at home and abroad, and it has the data to prove it. MOTION PICTURE ACADEMY MAKES STRIDES ON DIVERSITY WITH NEW MEMBERS
L.A. Times did a lengthy investigation of the academy's membership that revealed that its nearly 5,800 voting members were largely old, white and male. The story prompted a flurry of controversy inside and outside the industry which has finally sped up its often desultory process of broadening its membership horizons.

IMDB/AMAZON 'JANE DOE' CASE: JUDGE DISMISSES FRAUD CLAIMS, DENIES DEADLINE EXTENSION
Huong Hoang, the formerly anonymous actress who's suing IMDB and its parent company Amazon for revealing her true age, suffered a double legal setback this week, as a judge dismissed her fraud claims against the company and denied her motion for relief on the deadlines for the case.
