INDUSTRY NEWS

BC FILM INDUSTRY SEEKS TAX BREAK IN 'BAD YEAR'
The $1-billion B.C. industry has shown little growth over the last few years, and for the first time in nearly a decade, B.C. has fallen behind Ontario in the North American production centre rankings.

FALL TV SEES OLD FACES
The week-long series of fall-schedule announcements by the major U.S. networks in New York has ended. Vancouver-filmed Alcatraz and The Secret Circle cancelled. New series, Arrow, greenlit. Supernatural and Fringe renewed.

IT'S STILL A MAN'S WORLD AT THE MOVIES
Females were "dramatically under-represented" in North America's top 100 grossing films last year, accounting for 33 per cent of all characters at a time when they made up nearly 51 per cent of the U.S. population, according to a study.

WHY THE FILM TAX CREDIT IS ESSENTIAL
Over 70 per cent of a Saskatchewan production's financing comes from outside the province. Non-refundable tax credits do not trigger this inward investment: they cannot be used by the producer as proof that a production will be fully financed through expected revenues.

CANADIAN WAVE HEADS TO CANNES FILM FESTIVAL
A strong Canadian contingent is heading to the La Croisette seaside strip for the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, which will screen new movies from both established names like David Cronenberg and budding directors invited to the French fest for the first time.

WHO KILLED THE PLAYHOUSE
For crying in the soup, can't a guy go on vacation without all hell breaking loose? When I left Vancouver for Australia late last year, little did I know my return would be to a town torn by an intense debate over the Vancouver Playhouse - did it jump, or was it pushed? More than anything, a bureaucratic straitjacket sealed the Vancouver theatre institution's fate.

175 HOURS OF ORIGINAL CANADIAN PROGRAMMING WILL BE LOST AT CBC
In spite of a hefty funding reduction of $115-million over three years, as always, the show must go on. Two series, Michael Tuesday and Thursday and Insecurity , have been cancelled. According to reports, the CBC is looking at ways to bring back Battle of the Blades and Steven and Chris .

UPCOMING TRAINING

SOUNDSWRITE WORKSHOPS
Why do respected acting coaches like Tony Alcantar and Mark Brandon recommend Soundswrite's INTRO TO VOICEOVER as the best voiceover workshop in the city?
Because we cover more in one weekend than any course out there including commercials, narration, animation, ADR, Walla, audio books, where to get work, and how to set up a home studio. The bonus? You'll get a fully produced commercial to start your demo. A small class = hours of mic time. There's no course like it!
Only one space left in our May 26th/27th class. Our studio is busy, so our last class until fall is June 9th/10th.
