INDUSTRY NEWS

FEARS MOUNTING OVER B.C. FILM PRODUCTION
And with a high Canadian dollar, the imminent disappearance of the film-friendly HST, and a lack of parity on tax credits, the B.C. production industry is now looking to protect its billion-dollar industry. One step is lobbying the province on tax credits. Another: aiming at a national film strategy.

VANCOUVER TEEN CATAPULTS INTO HOLLYWOOD CAREER OVERNIGHT
Paloma Kwiatkowski is remarkably calm for a teen who has gone from aspiring high school actor to a three-picture deal in the course of a couple of months. The audition was her first ever, and after a couple of callbacks, a bit of studio chin-scratching, and a full-costume screen test complete with dyed hair and coloured contact lenses, she was cast as Thalia, daughter of Zeus.

ERICA DURANCE IS SAVING HOPE FOR NEW MEDICAL DRAMA
Erica Durance compares performing fake surgery to acting in a well-choreographed play. The Calgary-born actress is on the phone from Toronto, where she is on a lunch break after six gruelling hours in the operating room, performing make-believe life-and-death procedures as the star of CTV's new medical drama Saving Hope.

LIONSGATE REUPS GRINDSTONE/EMMETT FURLA FILM SLATE DEAL
The latest agreement follows the Vancouver-based indie studio releasing four to five films annually under the Lionsgate/Grindstone Entertainment names, including the Bruce Willis-starrer Set Up, the crime drama Freelancers, starring Robert DeNiro and Forrest Whitaker, and the serial killer thriller The Frozen Ground, starring Nicolas Cage and John Cusack.

MEMORIAL FOR JACKIE CROSSLAND TO BE HELD AT FIREHALL ART CENTRE
A memorial for alternative theatre pioneer Jackie Crossland, who passed away last week, will be held Sunday, June 17, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., at the Firehall Art Centre. Crossland died of cancer May 30, one month after her diagnosis, at the age of 69. She went on to act, write, and direct for a number of Vancouver and Toronto theatre companies, including the Vancouver Playhouse, the Vancouver East Cultural Centre, Tamahnous Theatre--which she founded with her partner, Nora Randall--and Savage God.

VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN'S FESTIVAL CELEBRATES ATTENDANCE BOOST
The Vancouver International Children's Festival seems to have put its difficulties behind. Last year, lacklustre ticketsales almost forced the festival's complete shutdown--but this year, the festival's 35th, the numbers are telling a different story.

OTTAWA RESTORES FUNDING TO SUMMERWORKS FESTIVAL
In a surprise move, the Harper government is restoring the funding it controversially pulled last year from the SummerWorks Theatre Festival after the Toronto event was criticized in 2010 by a spokesman for Prime Minister Stephen Harper for scheduling a play that "glorifies terrorism." No explanation for the restoration is contained in the letter which informs SummerWorks it will be receiving a total of $90,000 over the 2012-13 and 2013-14 fiscal years, subject to an as-yet-unreceived letter "stipulating terms for disbursement."

HOW CHICK-FLICKS ARE BREAKING THE CONVENTIONS OF WEDDED BLISS
A new crop of romantic comedies is subverting the idea that a 'perfect' marriage is the ultimate fulfillment of female purpose. A fascinating thing has happened recently on the way to the cineplex. The romantic comedy - which has always revolved around the ages-old narrative for female fulfilment, the happily-surmounted challenges that give way, at length, to a walk down the aisle - is swerving.
