INDUSTRY NEWS
BC'S LEO AWARDS HONOURS FILM, TV ACHIEVEMENTS IN DIFFICULT TIMES
Before the ceremony, Leo Awards President, Walter Deroshin, explained the importance of these kinds of events. "British Columbia has what I call a gorilla gesture when it comes to this industry," he said. "It pounds its chest about being a billion dollar industry, 20,000 people employed, x amount of tax dollars generated. But the complimentary gesture to that is recognizing the artistic excellence within the community. Unless we're good at what we do, it doesn't matter how much of it we do."http://www.vancouversun.com/Awards+honours+film+achievements+difficult+times/6685816/story.html
NOMINESS FOR THE 30TH ANNUAL JESSIE RICHARDSON AWARDS ANNOUNCED
The nominees for the 30th annual Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards were announced Tuesday (May 22), with the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre Company, which shut its doors in March, being felt as a strong presence. The Jessie Awards ceremony will be held at the Commodore Ballroom on June 25.http://www.straight.com/article-689951/vancouver/nominees-30th-annual-jessie-richardson-theatre-awards-announced
VANCOUVER LAUNCHES ARTS AND CULTURE POLICY COUNCIL
The City of Vancouver launched a 15-member arts council today (May 23) that will act as an advisory committee on civic arts and culture programs. Vision Vancouver councillor Heather Deal said the city received an unprecedented amount of interest from people wanting to be a part of the civic advisory committee. She noted the nomination committee tried to include broad representation from the performing arts, visual arts and literary arts, and from emerging talent as well as established artists.http://www.straight.com/article-691901/vancouver/vancouver-launches-arts-and-culture-policy-council
IT'S OVER FOR CANADIAN SCI-FI SERIES SANCTUARY
Dr. Helen Magnus has offered refuge to her final Abnormal: Sanctuary, the made-in-B.C. Canadian science fiction series, will not return for a fifth season. The finale for the fourth season - and, as it turns out, the series - aired late last year. Syfy said the decision to cancel the show was purely financially driven.http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/arts/television/its-over-for-canadian-sci-fi-series-sanctuary/article2441663/
SECURITY BREACH ALLEGED IN MAKING OF BIN LADEN RAID FILM
A House committee chairman charged Wednesday in Washington that the CIA and Defence Department jeopardized national security by co-operating too closely with filmmakers producing a movie on the raid that killed Osama bin Laden. Homeland Security Committee Chairman Peter King. R-N.Y., first raised questions about the bin Laden movie last summer, but said newly released documents confirm his suspicions. The filmmakers are director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal, who won Academy Awards for the motion picture The Hurt Locker.http://www.cbc.ca/news/arts/story/2012/05/23/bin-laden-film-washington.html
OLDER FACES ON SCREEN DRAW AN OVERLOOKED CROWD
Anytime a film costs $10 million to make and ticket sales approach $100 million, Hollywood pays attention. But jaws really drop when a movie starring actors in their 70s and aimed at people over 50 pulls off that trick. Wait. Stop. Older people will go to the movies if we give them something to watch besides superheroes and special effects?http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/24/movies/older-faces-on-screen-draw-an-overlooked-crowd.html
CONTINUUM ASKS "WHAT IF?"
"What if" is one of the great questions of science fiction. Vancouver writer-producer Simon Barry knew that even when he was a student at the University of British Columbia's film program. What if, for example, a futuristic, science-fiction TV police procedural were set in Vancouver and filmed in Vancouver, with the city representing itself for a change. Barry started to imagine various "what if" scenarios, all of them involving time travel and a crime of the century. http://www.canada.com/entertainment/Continuum+asks+what/6660184/story.html
HIT & MISS: SHOULD NON-TRANSGENDER ACTORS PLAY TRANSGENDER CHARACTERS?
Chloë Sevigny plays a transgender assassin in the new series. Paris Lees, who is trans, also went for the part. Should non-trans actors play trans people? Many argue that trans performers shouldn't be limited to trans roles. Yes, it's called acting for a reason, but it would be disingenuous to pretend physical form isn't a casting consideration. That's not to say trans people can't "pass". Many do. But there's often a physicality to being trans which greater familiarity would make less remarkable.http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/shortcuts/2012/may/23/hit-miss-transgender-actors
AN INTERVIEW WITH ANGRY ASIAN MAN
Angry Asian Man--Phil Yu--stood up in the crowd. People were excited. "That's Phil Yu! Oh my God, he's here!" Phil Yu pointed out that as rumour had it, this sequel was set in Bangkok. That alone didn't bode well. He also proclaimed: "If this movie ends up lapsing into the same old, tired, racist stereotypes, then don't expect us to shill it for you." Fist pumps all around. Angry Asian Man has SPOKEN!http://ricepapermagazine.ca/2012/05/an-interview-with-angry-asian-man/
