INDUSTRY NEWS

B.C.'s CREATIVE SECTOR CALLS ON PROVINCE FOR ECONOMIC HELP
B.C. creative-sector leaders are calling on the province to help homegrown industries like film, music, and digital media become more competitive by improving economic policy. A group of industry representatives held a news conference in Vancouver to highlight fear about the loss of skilled professionals to places like Quebec and Ontario that offer better access to financial rewards like tax credits and investment funding.

TV PILOTS FOR WOULD-BE NEW HITS REACH PEAK IN APRIL
It's pilot season, that time of year when many are called but few are chosen. In the never-ending scramble to find the next Lost or Desperate Housewives, little expense is spared, and no idea considered too outrageous, for the networks, as they send dozens of spec scripts into production, to fill looming gaps in the fall schedules when those schedules are announced in mid-May.

ATTENDANCE AT VANCOUVER PLAYHOUSE SHOW CALLED 'EMBARRASSING'
"That was an epic fail," actor John Cassini says. "To come out ... and see those empty seats, I've got to say, in the first couple of minutes of the show, I think we were all, as actors, a little shocked." He had seen opening night as an opportunity to make a statement about the importance of the Playhouse and theatre in general in Vancouver. Imagine the message that a sold-out house could have sent, he says. "It was an embarrassing display."

CANADIAN BROADCASTERS CALL FOR PROTECTION FROM US DIGITAL GIANTS
TV networks and cablers called on the CRTC to act on Netflix Canada, even as the regulator insists they are not disadvantaged by the U.S. video streaming giant's presence here.

QUIET IN THE AUDIENCE, PLEASE
Symphony orchestras, regional theatres, ballet and opera companies across North America are feeling stiff competition to lure ticket buyers who they believe are increasingly distracted by interactive entertainment and social media. But when those sought-after new audiences do show up, they don't always behave the way that venerable institutions and veteran audiences expect.

THERE IS RACISM IN REALITY TV BUT NOT ON THE BACHELOR
Is the answer a lawsuit to make shows like The Bachelor more inclusive? I would say the answer is a lot simpler than that.

THE BEAUTY PARADOX
Ashley Judd's recent response to the media frenzy regarding her "puffy face" was as intriguing to me as the thousands of comments that her allegedly altered appearance provoked. Amazing how the face of one beautiful woman can set off a firestorm, igniting a torrent of emotions far beyond simply "has she or hasn't she?" Welcome to what I call the "Beauty Paradox."
