VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL FILM CENTRE BUCKS DOWNWARD INDUSTRY TRENDS
The doom and gloom that the local film exhibition industry has had to face, due to rapid and dramatic technological and economic changes, has dominated most movie news headlines over the past few years. But one of the few organizations that is managing to buck the trend is the Vancouver International Film Centre.

BUDGET CUTS? NATIONAL FILM BOARD IS NOT AFRAID
The cuts appear grave: Less assistance to filmmakers; three to four fewer major projects per year; 73 jobs eliminated. And the Cinérobothèque in Montreal and the Mediatheque in Toronto will be closed by September. All this for an institution that last year alone garnered two Oscar nominations. Yet within the film board itself, there's a sense of renewal.

JOSS WHEDON PERFORMS AT WOMEN'S RIGHTS EVENT, DECRIES SEXISM, PRAISES 'HUNGER GAMES'
Whedon was all about the women's rights organization, Equality Now. A life-long feminist who had been honored by the group in 2006, the multi-hyphenate storytelling guru was co-host of the organization's 20th anniversary celebration at Manhattan's Asia Society on the Upper East Side, which came smack in the middle of promotion for his upcoming Marvel superhero blockbuster.

THE CRONENBERGS AT CANNES
When you hear that Cronenberg is going to Cannes, it's generally understood to mean David, the 69-year-old Canadian director of past Cannes competition films A History of Violence, Spider, and Crash. This year, however, there will be two Cronenbergs at the famed French film festival.
