INDUSTRY NEWS

BC FILM BIZ HOPES FOR REEL HOT YEAR
There have been a number of things working in the industry's favour recently, not least of them - counter intuitively - the American recession and the problems plaguing big U.S. networks. With advertising revenue down, the big broadcasters have been casting about for inexpensive content, and they've found it north of the border.

EAST OF MAIN TO FEED PROJECT LIMELIGHT
The restaurant that will feed Project Limelight -- both literally by providing children with meals and figuratively by providing cash flow for the free arts education program -- is poised to become an "under the radar" community hub, says Alex Fraser.

AFTRA BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVES SAG-AFTRA MERGER PACKAGE
The AFTRA board of directors Saturday approved a proposed merger with SAG, triggering a membership vote that could unite the unions by the end of March into a single union, to be called SAG-AFTRA. The move was expected and came a day after SAG's board passed a similar motion.

WHERE CAN YOU GO FOR A REAL MOVIE EXPERIENCE ANYMORE?
Vancouver movie theatres continue to close in quick succession. Oakridge Cinema shut its doors a few weeks ago, to be replaced by a Crate & Barrel or some such infernal thing. The Hollywood Theatre is long gone. The Granville 7 is looking a little iffy. If it turns off the lights and closes out the till, it will join a long line of vanished cinemas that haunt the city like the flickering ghosts of movies palaces past.

FILM SCHOOLS CREATE NETWORKS THAT EXTEND WELL INTO CAREERS
The film schools around Vancouver have a way of creating friendships and working relationships that echo through careers. This week's case in point: writer-director Ross Ferguson making his first feature (the thriller Primary) with a little help from the friends he made some 20 years ago at Simon Fraser University.
