Hi . Happy New Year! Today is Monday, Jan 9 2012. Here is a snippet of news and what's upcoming.
INDUSTRY NEWS
'AKIRA' SHUTS DOWN PRODUCTION IN VANCOUVER
The project, which has been through several incarnations, is being shut down in the face of casting, script and budget issues. The production offices in Vancouver are being closed, with below-the-line talent and crew told to stop working. "Everybody is being sent home," according to an insider.http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/akira-production-shut-down-budget-warner-bros-278729
LITTLE MOSQUE LEAVES THE PRAIRIES
When Sheila McCarthy got the call asking if she'd be up for a part in CBC's quirky comedy Little Mosque on the Prairie, the veteran actress first thought her agent was pulling her leg. The groundbreaking comedy about Muslims and non-Muslims co-existing in a small, rural town of Mercy, Sask. defied McCarthy's - and many other's - expectations. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/arts/television/little-mosque-leaves-the-prairies/article2295294/
NORTH VANCOUVER'S PRESENTATION HOUSE THEATRE CUTS PROGRAMMING
Presentation House Theatre is cutting back the remainder of this year's season to avoid a repeat performance of its financial problems. "It's not that we were in trouble," said artistic director Kim Selody, "but we wanted to avoid facing a deficit this year. So we are being prudent in our response."http://www.vancouversun.com/North+Vancouver+Presentation+House+Theatre+cuts+programming/5959034/story.html
GAMING GRANTS REPORT DELAYED
The report was finished Oct. 31 and the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development issued a statement promising "government will release the report, in full, within the next 60 days - once it has had an opportunity to thoroughly review the document and determine next steps based on the options provided." But that didn't happen.http://www.timescolonist.com/Report+grants+delayed/5944248/story.html
CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE CASES IN HOLLYWOOD ATTRACT ATTENTION
Advocates and professionals who work with victims of child sexual abuse say predators exploit the glittery lure of Hollywood to prey on aspiring actors or models. They assert that the problem is more widespread than the industry is willing to acknowledge and have called for tougher laws and better screening of those who represent or work with children.http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-ct-hollywood-molesters-20120109,0,5389019.story
MOVIE THEATRES GO DIGITAL OR GO BUST
More and more movie houses are going digital. In the first quarter of this year, for the first time ever, more movies will be shown digitally in Canadian cinemas than in the standard 35-mm film format. Digital movies are typically delivered on a hard drive that can be held in the hand. Or in some cases, the signal can be beamed in by satellite. That means no heavy 35-mm film canisters or movie projectionists to thread spools.http://www.toronto.com/article/709165--movie-theatres-go-digital-or-go-bust
