24's JON CASSAR TO DIRECT CANADIAN COP DRAMA PILOT IN VANCOUVER
The Kennedys helmer/exec producer Jon Cassar has been tapped to direct the Canadian drama pilot Out of Time. The series, to start shooting in Vancouver in early 2012, will air on Showcase and be shopped worldwide by GK-TV.

SHOULD LIBRARIES BE IN THE VIDEO BUSINESS?
Allan Tong has a more particular reason than most for availing himself of DVDs distributed through the Toronto Public Library. The Toronto documentary filmmaker is leaving for Sierra Leone next week to make a film about amputee soccer players. As background, he recently borrowed a copy of Murderball, a 2005 documentary about wheelchair rugby.

LIONSGATE, SUMMIT RE-START MERGER TALK
Summit Entertainment, currently riding a huge box office success with Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1, and Lionsgate Entertainment, presently in production on the first of a series of movies based on the Hunger Games books, are once again discussing a merger.

VANCOUVER PLAYHOUSE DIRECTOR MAX REIMER TO FOCUS SOLELY ON FINANCE
Big changes are ahead for the Vancouver Playhouse. In an exclusive interview with The Vancouver Sun, Playhouse artistic managing director Max Reimer revealed this week that the theatre company's 50th season, starting in September 2012, will no longer see him playing the twin roles of managing and artistic director.

Aspiring filmmakers are invited to present their short film idea in a 5-minute video. 40 semi-finalists will be chosen to pitch in person to a jury of industry professionals. 12 finalists will workshop their script with a professional story editor. 6 winners will receive $800 and a production package with everything they need to make their short film in just 8 days.
