TELEFILM GETS IT RIGHT WITH 'SUCCESS INDEX' FOR CANADIAN FILMS
What a relief to see that the quaint old word "culture" has been revived at Telefilm Canada. The word all but disappeared from the federal film agency's public statements in the last decade, when the rallying cry was "gross box office," a.k.a. bums in seats.

NEW BRUNSWICK'S AXED TAX CREDIT RETURNS TO LIFE
Frugal New Brunswick is back on Canada's film tax credit gravy train. The Canadian province in March 2011 stunned local film and TV producers by phasing out a 40 percent tax credit to cut the provincial debt.

STUDY REVEALS HOLLYWOOD STILL SEXUALIZES, UNDERREPRESENTS WOMEN
Director Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win a best director Oscar (beating her ex-husband, James Cameron) in 2010. Yet in spite of notable gains made by women in Hollywood over the past few decades, a study has revealed that women still remain underrepresented and sexualized in Hollywood movies.

CANADIAN LABS GROWS NEW LAUGHS
Everyone knows Canadians are funny -- especially Canadians, who keep homegrown standup, radio and TV comedy thriving. But bigscreen laughs tend to be a different story.
A few years ago, bizzers told government film funder Telefilm that Canadian comedies weren't making the leap to Hollywood and beyond, says the Canadian Film Center's film and TV programs director Kathryn Emslie.

BRITISH FILM MUST KEEP THE LIGHTS ON
What do budgetary pressures and public sector cuts represent for UK filmmakers, industry pundits and creative minds? Film London, the strategic support agency for cinema and media in the capital, saw its funding from the London Development Agency cut earlier this year by 22% from a meagre £1.66m to a scrawny £1.3m.

VANCOUVER'S STRONG F/X ON BIZ
Vancouver's film industry has taken a hit of late, with the dollar and loonie nearly at parity, and strong competition from Ontario, where tax credits are greater than those in British Columbia. Still, thanks to the strength of a burgeoning visual effects and digital animation presence, the biz in BC has managed to stay afloat.
