Published: Mon, 10/10/11

Hi . Today is Monday, Oct 10 2011.  Here is a snippet of news and what's upcoming.

INDUSTRY NEWS

CRTC WON'T REGULATE NETFLIX CANADA
Canada's TV regulator has ignored industry calls to put the U.S. video streaming giant in its place, and will instead let the online and mobile video content market evolve. The CRTC, the country's TV watchdog, on Tuesday said it will not regulate Netflix Canada, or force the U.S. video streaming giant and other foreign digital platforms to subsidize homegrown Canadian TV series.

TV STARS COURT INTERNATIONAL AUDIENCES FOR EXPOSURE
Already established in her home province of Quebec, francophone actress Karine Vanasse set her sights on launching a big screen career in the English-language market and beyond. The lanky brunette says it's a small-screen role on the big-budget ABC series "Pan Am" that's proving to be the real key to her bid for global stardom, noting that early international sales have already introduced her to audiences overseas.

IRANIAN FILMS GO AUDIENCE-FRIENDLY, ARE EXPLICITLY POLITICAL
Circumstance is a love story about two renegade schoolgirls in Tehran who defy authority. The film won the audience award at Sundance, was shot in Lebanon, under clandestine conditions, and the footage was smuggled out of the country.  After a worldwide casting call, Boosheri won the lead role by jetting from her hometown of Vancouver to an 11th-hour audition in Toronto.

"50/50" PASSES VANCOUVER OFF AS SEATTLE (BUT NOT REALLY)
The movie "50/50" is about a 27-year-old Seattle man facing cancer -- but you won't see much of Seattle in the film. And that's because, like many movies, this one was primarily filmed in Vancouver. Washington has long had a tough time competing with the tax incentives and other perks film companies enjoy in Canada -- and last summer the state ended incentives for filmmakers altogether.

FILM TAX INCENTIVES ARE A CHALLENGE EVERYWHERE
"I was working on 'Avengers' earlier this year, and the minute the governor started talking about changing the incentives program, they pulled out of Michigan and went to Cleveland," says David Rumble, a Michigan-based location manager. "So I've spent the last seven months in Ohio along with a lot of other Michigan crew people who had to follow the work."
