ELYSIUM SET TO PUT VANCOUVER ON MAP
Work started this past week in Vancouver on the sci-fi feature Elysium, a film that has more homegrown creative talents involved than the usual Hollywood projects that shoot here. The movie stars Hollywood A- listers Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, but they're working on an idea generated and crafted by a pool of collaborators around Vancouver writer-director Neill Blomkamp.

INDEPENDENT FLIXX JOINS THE LIST OF VANCOUVER VIDEO STORES CLOSING DOORS
Independent Flixx on Denman Street will close at the end of the month after 12 years in business. With its colourful storefront and interior, the West End store is something of neighbourhood icon.

BC TEEN'S MOVIE TO PREMIERE AT LA FESTIVAL
Vancouver features prominently in Adam Bogoch's coming-of-age comedy, Complexity. At 15, Bogoch put away childish things and wrote his first featurelength screenplay. Avoid Confrontation was well received, but Bogoch views his sophomore project, Complexity, as his true debut film.

ONTARIO TO ALLOW CELEBS TO BRING THEIR OWN PRIVATE GUARDS
The province's Ministry of Community Safety and Corrections posted a proposal to its website last Friday seeking exemptions for security guards hired by those in the music, film and television industries. The amendment, if approved, will come into effect on Sept. 2, less than a week before the first red-carpet appearances at the Toronto International Film Festival.

LOS ANGELES TALENT MANAGER SENTENCED TO PROBATION
A Studio City-based talent manager has pleaded no contest to operating an advance-fee talent service that placed several minors at risk of harm and another count of failing to file a required $50,000 bond with the state.
