ARTS CONFERENCES: TOO MUCH TALK AND NO ACTION?
Arts organisations are great. They do amazing, life-changing work on tiny budgets. They build community cohesion, reduce criminal reoffending, help young people learn new skills. A group of like-minded people gathered in one place could put serious weight behind something and make a practical difference. However, many of the recent events I've attended have not taken advantage of this fact. http://www.guardian.co.uk/culture/theatreblog/2011/aug/23/arts-conferences-too-much-talk
LIGHTBOX READY TO SHINE AS TORONTO FILM FEST APPROACHES
Since the opening of the TIFF Bell Lightbox last year, organizers of the Toronto International Film Festival have grappled with a minor problem: too many directors want their movies to screen at the gleaming new facility. "There has been a little minor scramble of getting into Cinema 1 in TIFF Bell Lightbox by a lot of talent," said Noah Cowan, artistic director of the one-year-old complex. http://www.ctv.ca/CTVNews/Entertainment/20110904/tiff-2011-bell-lightbox-ready-for-festival-spotlight-110904/
GREEN THUMB THEATRE ROBBED OF $24,000 WORTH OF EQUIPMENT
Vancouver's Green Thumb Theatre has been left reeling after a weekend break-in cost the company $25,000 worth of computers and equipment. "We had a bunch of equipment taken and computers, and it's all stuff that we're just about to use as we're in rehearsal now for our first tour."http://www.straight.com/article-446641/vancouver/green-thumb-theatre-loses-25000-worth-equipment-breakin
FIESTA OF FRESH IMAGES AT VLAFF
Christian Sida-Valenzuela is throwing down the gauntlet, goddammit. The shaggy, Mexican-born 31-year-old says he's putting his personal guarantee on every last short, documentary, and feature movie that screens at this year's Vancouver Latin American Film Festival--his first as director after working for four years as a programmer.http://straight.com/article-444331/vancouver/fiesta-fresh-images
