INDUSTRY NEWS
NETFLIX SEEKS TO REASSURE CANADIAN MEDIA PRODUCERS
The chief content officer for Netflix says his company is not concerned about the CRTC's fact-finding exercise investigating so-called over-the-top (OTT) services such as Netflix. "Regulating the Internet has not been very politically popular anywhere in the world," said Ted Sarandos, "and it doesn't work very well, except for maybe China and North Korea."http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/arts/television/netflix-seeks-to-reassure-canadian-media-producers/article2062401/
WHY THE KILLING'S VEENA SUD IS DRAWN TO DARKNESS
With days to go before the highly-anticipated season finale of the series The Killing, word surfaced on Monday that AMC has renewed the shrouded-in-secrecy series for a second season. But its creator Veena Sud wasn't talking. "We shall see," was all she would say (with a big smile) when asked about its future. Maybe she'll tell us in 13 weeks.http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/arts/television/why-the-killings-veena-sud-is-drawn-to-darkness/article2062333/
ARE THE INDIAN INTERNATIONAL FILM ACADEMY AWARDS IN TORONTO REALLY THE EQUIVALENT OF THE OSCARS?
The International Indian Film Academy awards event in the Toronto suburb of Brampton is generating a heap of media coverage. The Canadian media repeatedly refer to this gala as the Indian equivalent of the Academy Awards. With Brampton as the host--helped by a $12-million contribution from the Ontario government--there have been numerous stories about how this could lead to more Bollywood films being shot in Canada.http://www.straight.com/article-400832/vancouver/are-indian-international-film-academy-awards-toronto-really-indian-equivalent-oscars
IN BEGINNERS, ART IMITATES FILMMAKER MIKE MILLS'S LIFE
When it comes to creative endeavours, filmmaking is almost an afterthought for Mike Mills. A long-time graphic designer, illustrator, and documentarian, the California-born artist had already done everything but play bass for R.E.M (that's a different Mike Mills) before making 2005's darkly comic coming-of-age tale Thumbsucker. Since then, he has also made several TV ads and music videos. But the deeply personal momentum behind his new film, Beginners, was just too urgent to ignore.http://www.straight.com/article-400130/vancouver/beginners-art-imitates-life
