OTTAWA CANCELS FUNDING FOR TORONTO THEATRE FESTIVAL THAT PRESENTED TERRORIST PLAY
Toronto's SummerWorks theatre and music festival, which was criticized by the Stephen Harper government in the past for staging a play related to the Toronto 18 terrorist plot, has lost its funding from the Department of Canadian Heritage with only weeks before the festival begins on Aug. 5.

CINEFLIX MEDIA MAKES A MOVE INTO TV DRAMA AND COMEDY PRODUCTION
The international production and distribution company Cineflix Media is making a move into Canadian television drama and comedy production and has hired away a prominent CBC TV executive to oversee its new venture.

FLAHERTY SAYS ARTS FUNDING NOT TO BE COUNTED ON
Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty has a warning for cultural institutions that have come to rely on regular government funding: don't count on it. Flaherty delivered the message Tuesday shortly after announcing $500,000 in support for this year's Canada Walk of Fame Festival, to be held in Toronto. The funding falls under the Canada Arts Presentation Fund administered by Canada Heritage.

APPLAUSE VIDEO OWNER PREPARES TO CLOSE VANCOUVER STORE
One of Vancouver's last independent video stores will close its doors on July 15, after almost a quarter-century in the biz. "It was an incredible, amazing journey from the beginning of Applause Video, back in 1987, you know, when everything was brand new and exciting," German Camacho told the Straight, having just opened his store at 2575 Commercial Drive for the day.

QUEBEC'S DENIS VILLENEUVE MAKING $50MILLION THRILLER IN ENGLISH
Quebec director Denis Villeneuve says he's assembling a cast for a big-budget U.S. thriller that's expected to be his English-language debut. The Oscar-nominated filmmaker says he's attached to the Warner Bros. feature Prisoners and hopes to begin shooting by the end of this year. The film, with a $50-million budget, centres on a working-class father who goes after a man that he believes kidnapped his daughter.
