Jay Brazeau appreciates all the support he has received after he suffered a "tiny" stroke May 12 during an Arts Club preview for the musical version of John Waters's Hairspray. HICCUPS' THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE
Listen up, kids: Nancy Robertson isn't a children's-book author with anger issues. She just plays one on TV. Of course, that doesn't mean Robertson -- children's writer Millie Upton in Brent Butt's homegrown comedy Hiccups -- doesn't lose it on occasion. WHAT IT TAKES TO MORPH FROM TV SERIES TO FILM
Two examples arrived this week on Blu-ray: Wild Wild West (1999) and Maverick (1994). The second performed better at the box office than the first, but, in the spirit of contrariness, here's a defence for director Barry Sonnenfeld's version of what, on TV from 1965 to 1969, was called The Wild, Wild West. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/arts/warren-clements/what-it-takes-to-morph-from-tv-series-to-film/article2036001/
CANADIANS ON TV SHOPPING SPREE
It was a new-look Canadian TV contingent that arrived in Los Angeles for the May Screenings and, thanks to a fresh crop of owners with deep pockets, the main networks were buying with renewed vigor. But they're also buying differently. Following a couple of years of rapid-fire change in the TV biz in the Great White North, the three main webs -- CTV, Global and the smaller City-TV -- are now all owned by distributors.http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118037720
