'LIFE IS GOOD' FOR VANCOUVER ACTOR ON THE KILLING
Vancouver actor Brandon Jay McLaren has to tread carefully where Bennett Ahmed is concerned. Ahmed is a prime suspect on TV's hottest murder-mystery series, AMC's The Killing, and if McLaren gives away too much about his character, such a spoiler might cut the white-knuckles suspense that has been increasing so formidably week after week.

TWO-THIRDS OF APPLICANTS FOR VANCOUVER 125TH ANNIVERSARY GRANTS TURNED DOWN
Out of the 217 applications for the City of Vancouver's 125th Anniversary Grants received, only 70 are being recommended for approval. A total of $547,000 is to be dispensed, a far cry from the $3 million requested. The report notes that "the volume of applications led to an extremely competitive process, and with finite resources not all requests are being recommended for support."

EAST VAN'S RIO THEATRE SOLD BUT PLANS TO CARRY ON
East Vancouver's independent Rio Theatre has found a sugar daddy to help it keep producing its unique mix of live music, cult-film screenings, independent flicks, and first-run Hollywood fare in hardscrabble economic times. The popular single-screen venue near Broadway and Commercial Drive has been sold to Festival Cinemas partners Leonard Schein and Tom Lightburn, who run the Ridge, Park, and Fifth Avenue theatres.

CATTRALL CAN RELATE TO ROLE OF FADING SEXPOT
"I was just a hippie chick from Vancouver Island," says Kim Cattrall. "What the hell did I know?" The actress and latter-day feminist icon is referring to the very beginning of her career in show business, when she was still naive enough to believe talent could override appearance. She's not so starry-eyed anymore, and it's evident Cattrall has developed some pretty solid opinions about the place of women in the entertainment industry.

VANCOUVER'S BARD ON THE BEACH UNFOLDS A NEW, BETTER TENT
The new principal tent at what festival artistic director Christopher Gaze dubbed Vancouver's "festival al fresco" was unveiled Thursday and, thanks to a $500,000 donation by BMO Financial Group, marks the first phase in a campaign titled Staging Our Future, which will also see a replacement next year of the smaller tent housing the Douglas Campbell Studio Stage.

DANISH DIRECTOR BARRED FROM FESTIVAL AFTER MAKING HITLER JOKES
The Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier's longstanding relationship with the Cannes Film Festival came to an abrupt halt on Thursday when the festival's board of directors declared Mr. von Trier "persona non grata" a day after he joked at a news conference for his latest film, "Melancholia," that he was a Nazi and sympathized with Hitler.

RYAN GOSLING'S CAREER DRIVE
It's a tough action film about a getaway driver who takes on a mob of violent criminals. People are kicked to death. Cars are pushed over cliffs. The blood flows. So it's something of a surprise to hear that Drive, the European-tinged thriller that stars Ryan Gosling as an unbeatable hero, began with a dinner between Gosling and director Nicolas Winding Refn that was like a date gone wrong.

JAY BRAZEAU AND LINDA DARLOW TO BE AWARDED FOR THEIR WORK
Jay Brazeau has been selected as the recipient of the 2010 Sam Payne Lifetime Achievement Award, which recognizes a Union of B.C. Performers accumulative outstanding body of work in the industry. The 2010 Sam Payne Award, which recognizes professional performers displaying humanity, artistic integrity and encouragement of new talent, will go to Linda Darlow.
