INDUSTRY NEWS

SIDNEY LUMET DIES AT 86
Director Sidney Lumet, who died Saturday of lymphoma, was the bigscreen's prime purveyor of films that addressed themes of justice and the corruption of power, almost always in a New York setting. In films including "12 Angry Men," "Serpico," "Prince of the City," "The Verdict" and "Q&A," he explored the always-fragile justice system and the danger that men motivated by greed, prejudice or a thirst for power can pervert it.

THE YEAR DOLLY PARTON WAS MY MOM DIRECTOR TARA JOHNS EXPLORES FEMALE AUTHENTICITY
Periods, affairs, bitchiness, pregnancy, and hair. In her first feature film, former Vancouverite Tara Johns amplifies the constant, closed-door female chitchat that sets in for many women at puberty. In real life, it's a kind of feminine white noise; on-screen, it's both uncomfortable and highly entertaining.

SAOIRSE RONAN GOES IN FOR THE KILL IN HANA
Teenage Irish actress Saoirse Ronan is making a big name for herself in Hollywood. In the process, she's also being swept into the rumour mill, which includes the one that had her playing Snow White opposite Julia Roberts's evil queen. That turned out not to be true.

DRAMEDY BRINGS CHAOS TO VANCOUVER
Chaos, a new comedic drama - or "dramedy," as it's known in show-business argot -- about a rogue group of covert CIA operatives determined to make the world safe for life, liberty and the pursuit of U.S. happiness. Chaos' pilot episode is set partly in the Sahara desert, as directed by X-Men: The Last Stand filmmaker Brett Ratner. So, naturally, the producers decided to base Chaos in Vancouver.

MAD MEN'S JESSICA PARE WORKS HER FRENCH-CANUCK CONNECTION
The first time Mad Men creator Matt Weiner laid eyes on Montreal-born actress Jessica Paré, who had a teeny part at the start of season four, he was bowled over by the exotic image she presented in a pencil-thin red suit, and declared: "You look like a French movie star."
